  • In the world of Sri Lankan fashion and entrepreneurship, few names command the level of respect and recognition that Fouzul Hameed has earned over the decades. Widely regarded as the country’s foremost menswear specialist, he has played a transformative role in shaping how generations of Sri Lankan men dress, present themselves, and perceive personal style. As the Managing Director of Hameedia, a company with roots dating back to 1949, Fouzul Hameed has successfully combined heritage, innovation, and business acumen to build a brand that extends far beyond clothing. Under his leadership, Hameedia evolved from a family-run tailoring business into a household name synonymous with quality, craftsmanship, and elegance. His passion for fashion, commitment to excellence, and dedication to customer experience have enabled the company to expand internationally while maintaining its Sri Lankan identity. Beyond business, he is also known as a mentor, philanthropist, and advocate for personal development, inspiring countless entrepreneurs and professionals through his work. In this edition of Legacy Builders, we sit down with Fouzul Hameed to explore the story behind the brand, the lessons learned from decades of entrepreneurship, the values that have guided his leadership journey, and his vision for the future of Sri Lankan business and fashion.

    1. Take us back to your childhood. What were some of the experiences and influences that shaped the person you are today?

I had a mischievous childhood, but I was fortunate to grow up with parents who instilled strong values in me. My mother in particular taught us honesty, integrity, discipline, and respect for people. Those lessons became the foundation of who I am today. I also grew up in a family business that has now lasted for over 77 years. Watching generations of our family work together taught me that success isn’t built overnight, and it’s built on trust, consistency, and shared values. Looking back, I believe my childhood wasn’t defined by material comforts but by the principles my parents gave me, and those values continue to guide every decision I make.

    2. At what point did you realize that fashion and entrepreneurship would become your life’s calling?

Interestingly, I never set out to become an entrepreneur. I always saw myself as a creative person who loved design and craftsmanship. Growing up around my father’s tailoring business, I spent countless hours watching designers and tailors at work. I realized that while many people could sketch a beautiful design, very few knew how to actually bring that design to life. Manufacturing garments requires technical knowledge, precision, and attention to detail. I briefly attended a fashion school in Thailand, but after a few classes I realized I already understood the fundamentals of design. What fascinated me was garment construction and the ability to transform an idea into a perfectly made piece. That’s when I knew fashion was where I belonged.

    3. Hameedia has become a household name in Sri Lanka. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while growing the business?

One of our biggest challenges has been competing against imitation products and unethical business practices. We’ve always believed in building our own brands rather than selling fake international labels. My parents taught us that business must be conducted honestly, and we’ve never compromised on that principle. Unfortunately, counterfeit products and fake branded garments have become common in the market. While they may generate quick profits, they hurt genuine local brands and discourage original designers from building something of their own. I’ve always believed Sri Lanka has incredible talent, but we need stronger support for local entrepreneurs and a market that values authenticity over imitation.

    4. What were the key decisions that transformed Hameedia from a local tailoring business into a leading menswear brand?

The biggest turning point was recognizing that ready-made garments were the future. I had spent years learning about fabrics, tailoring, manufacturing, and international fashion markets. I understood luxury, premium quality, and mass-market products because I had travelled extensively and learned from countries like Japan and Italy. As tailoring became increasingly difficult due to labour shortages and changing customer expectations, we shifted towards ready-made garments while maintaining the same quality standards. That allowed us to serve customers more efficiently without compromising craftsmanship. Rather than simply making clothes, we focused on building brands that catered to different customer segments.

    5. Looking back, what has been the most defining moment in Hameedia’s journey?

One of the most defining milestones was creating our own portfolio of brands, Signature, Le Bond, Envoy, and FH. Each brand serves a different customer segment, allowing us to reach a wider audience while maintaining quality and identity. More importantly, I’m grateful that throughout this journey we’ve stayed true to the values my parents taught us. Success isn’t measured only by profits; it’s measured by how honestly you build your business and how well you serve your customers.

    6. What qualities do you believe every successful entrepreneur must possess?

First and foremost, integrity. There are no shortcuts to lasting success. You need discipline, perseverance, and a clear vision. Every entrepreneur will experience setbacks, but the difference is whether you keep moving forward. Most importantly, your intentions must be right. If you build a business with honesty and genuine purpose, success will eventually follow.

    7. What has been your approach to building a strong company culture across generations of employees?

It starts with values. We believe in good management, ethical leadership, and treating people with respect. But above everything else, we focus on delivering an excellent product because no amount of marketing can compensate for poor quality.

We also encourage our staff to understand customers rather than simply sell to them. Whether someone is buying a wedding suit or everyday clothing, our responsibility is to guide them honestly not persuade them to spend beyond their means. For us, trust always comes before profit.

    8. How do you stay ahead of changing trends while maintaining timeless style?

Fashion constantly evolves, but elegance never goes out of style. I travel frequently to countries like Japan and Italy to observe global trends, customer behaviour, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. Those experiences help me understand where fashion is heading. At the same time, I believe style should always remain authentic. We don’t chase every trend; we focus on creating garments that combine contemporary fashion with timeless elegance.

    9. What inspired you to establish the Hameedia Grooming Academy, and what role does personal presentation play in professional success?

The Grooming Academy was born out of my desire to help men become better versions of themselves. During my travels, I noticed how much importance people placed on etiquette, presentation, and personal discipline. These aren’t complicated skills; they’re simple habits that can transform how a person is perceived. Personal presentation isn’t about expensive clothing. It’s about confidence, grooming, manners, and understanding what is appropriate for different occasions. Those qualities create stronger professionals, better leaders, and more confident individuals.

    10. Sri Lanka has faced numerous economic challenges, from COVID-19 to the financial crisis. How did Hameedia navigate those difficult times, and where do you see the future of Sri Lankan fashion and retail heading?

Over the decades we’ve faced civil unrest, economic downturns, bomb blasts, COVID-19, and the recent financial crisis. Each challenge tested our resilience. The economic crisis was especially difficult because costs doubled while customers’ purchasing power declined significantly. Despite these challenges, our priority was protecting the livelihoods of the thousands of families who depend on Hameedia. Looking ahead, I believe Sri Lanka has enormous potential. We have talented designers, skilled manufacturers, and a globally respected apparel industry. What we need is stronger support for local brands, better industry policies, and greater protection against counterfeit products. Fashion can become a major contributor to our economy if we invest in creativity, quality, and innovation.

    11. What motivates you to continue striving for excellence after achieving so much?

For me, it’s never been about money. Fashion is my passion, and every day I learn something new. The world keeps changing, and if we don’t continue learning and improving, we’ll be left behind. I also feel a responsibility to honour the legacy my parents created and to ensure future generations inherit a stronger business than the one I received.

    12. What advice would you give to young Sri Lankans who aspire to become entrepreneurs and industry leaders?

Start with integrity. Build a quality product, work hard, stay patient, and never look for shortcuts. Success takes time, and there will be many obstacles along the way. Most importantly, don’t give up. Every challenge teaches you something valuable. If your intentions are honest and you remain committed to excellence, success will come.

    13. Legacy Builders celebrates people who create lasting impact. What does the word “legacy” mean to you personally?

Legacy is about creating something that outlives you. It’s not about wealth, luxury, or recognition. It’s about building an institution based on values that future generations can continue with pride. I hope Hameedia will always stand for honesty, quality, dignity, and service. If those values continue long after I’m gone, then I believe I’ve built a meaningful legacy.
