The Monday Brief

Militant Attack
Kills 28
Tourists in Kashmir

On April 22, a devastating militant attack rocked the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, claiming the lives of at least 28 people, including women and children. Gunmen opened fire on a convoy of buses carrying both domestic and international tourists, causing widespread panic and chaos. The Resistance Front, a militant group believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, swiftly claimed responsibility for the assault. Indian authorities launched a massive security operation in the aftermath, while political leaders condemned the attack. The tragedy has severely escalated tensions between India and Pakistan, prompting international concern.

Global Energy Leaders  Convene in London

On April 24–25, the International Energy Agency (IEA) hosted the highly anticipated Summit on the Future of Energy Security at Lancaster House in London. Energy leaders, policymakers, and industry experts from around the world gathered to discuss the urgent and evolving challenges facing global energy systems. Topics included the impact of geopolitical tensions, the transition to renewable energy sources, cybersecurity threats to critical infrastructure, and the need for resilient, sustainable solutions in the face of climate change. The summit underscored the importance of international collaboration and innovation to safeguard future energy supplies and ensure economic and environmental stability worldwide.

Trump Criticised for Wearing Blue to
Pope Francis’ Funeral

U.S. President Donald Trump drew widespread criticism after appearing at Pope Francis’ funeral in an untraditional royal blue suit. While global leaders and dignitaries wore sombre black attire in line with Vatican protocol, Trump’s outfit was seen as disrespectful. Social media erupted with commentary, accusing him of turning a solemn event into a political spectacle. His aides defended the choice, claiming it symbolised ‘hope and renewal,’ but critics dismissed the explanation as tone-deaf.

Virginia Giuffre  Dies by
Suicide
at 41

Virginia Giuffre, a leading advocate for survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking, tragically died by suicide at her home in Neergabby, Western Australia, at the age of 41. Giuffre gained international recognition after bravely speaking out against Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew, becoming a symbol of resilience for countless survivors worldwide. In recent months, she had reportedly been facing ongoing health challenges and personal struggles. Her family, in a heartfelt statement, described her as a courageous and compassionate soul who dedicated her life to seeking justice for others.

India-Pakistan
Border Clash Heightens Tensions

On April 25, Indian and Pakistani soldiers engaged in a brief but intense exchange of fire along the highly volatile Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The clash reportedly lasted several hours and involved small arms and mortar fire, causing damage to nearby civilian areas but no immediate reports of casualties. This incident comes just days after a deadly militant attack on tourists in Pahalgam, further inflaming already fragile relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. International leaders have expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions, urging both countries to exercise restraint and reopen diplomatic channels to prevent further conflict.

Trump Administration Faces Judicial Crisis

On April 25, tensions between the Trump administration and the American judiciary reached a new high when FBI agents arrested Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan. She was charged with obstructing justice, accused of helping an undocumented immigrant evade detention by federal authorities. The arrest, viewed by many as politically motivated, has sparked a nationwide outcry. Democratic lawmakers have condemned the move, warning that it signals a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism and a direct attack on judicial independence. Civil rights groups have also rallied in support of Judge Dugan, calling for an immediate review of the case and greater protections for the judiciary.

London Marathon Showcases Stories of Resilience

The 2025 London Marathon was not only a showcase of athleticism but also a powerful display of human resilience and solidarity. Among the most inspiring participants were Anoosheh Ashoori, a former British-Iranian political prisoner detained in Iran, and Simon Shercliff, the British Ambassador who played a pivotal role in securing his release. The two ran side by side, raising funds and awareness for Hostage International, a charity supporting families of hostages. Their presence turned the marathon into a symbol of hope, perseverance, and advocacy, reminding the world that some battles are fought not just on roads, but in the pursuit of justice.
