The Lion Flag Rises at Silverstone: Yevan David’s Historic Formula 3 Podium

By Thaliba Cader
Standing on the podium at Silverstone, one of the most revered circuits in the history of motorsport, was a young driver carrying the hopes of an entire nation. Beside him was the Sri Lankan flag, raised for the first time in FIA Formula 3 history.
For Yevan David, it was not just a second-place finish. It was the realization of a dream that had travelled far beyond the shores of a small island nation.
“I’ve been representing Sri Lanka for a long time, and just to see the flag up on the podium was such a surreal feeling,” Yevan said after his historic FIA Formula 3 Sprint Race podium. “I knew it was possible in the coming future, but this soon was a bit of a surprise to me.”
The achievement was personal, but it was also deeply connected to something larger. Motorsport has never had the same traditions or pathways in Sri Lanka that exist in countries across Europe. There are no generations of Formula drivers carrying family names through the paddocks, no century-old racing culture shaping young talents from childhood. For Yevan, the journey was built differently. It came through dedication, sacrifice, and the belief that a Sri Lankan driver could one day stand among the best young racers in the world.
On Saturday at Silverstone, that belief became visible. Silverstone is not simply another circuit on the Formula 3 calendar. The home of British motorsport has witnessed some of the greatest battles in Formula 1, testing champions with its fast-sweeping corners and unforgiving nature. It is a track that demands confidence. For Yevan, confidence was the difference.
After one of his strongest qualifying performances of the season, where he secured a front row start for the Sprint Race through the reverse grid format, there was a feeling that something had changed. The difficult early stages of his first Formula 3 season had begun to give way to a clearer understanding of the car, the team, and himself.
“Already in practice, I saw that something clicked,” Yevan said. “We had that potential for qualifying.” But the road to a podium is rarely decided by pace alone. Formula 3 is a championship where the smallest details separate success from disappointment. Drivers fight for tiny margins, often against competitors who have spent years following the same path towards professional racing. A perfect lap, a clean start, a measured decision under pressure can change an entire weekend.

At Silverstone, Yevan delivered when it mattered most. The Sprint Race became a test of patience and discipline. While race winner Ugo Ugochukwu controlled the pace at the front, David found himself defending from the drivers behind him in a tense battle that lasted until the chequered flag. The final laps were not about chasing glory. They were about protecting it.
“I was just trying to keep in my head, keep my feet on the ground, just think lap by lap, corner by corner and not think about the result,” Yevan said.
That mindset revealed the maturity behind the helmet. In racing, the fastest driver is not always the one who succeeds. Often, it is the driver who can remain calm when everything around him becomes unpredictable. Yevan understood that. He managed the pressure. He avoided mistakes. He kept his position. And when the race ended, history was made.
The significance of the moment went beyond the result sheet. For Sri Lankan fans watching from home, seeing the national flag above a Formula 3 podium represented something rare. It was a reminder that talent can emerge from anywhere, and that ambition does not belong only to countries with decades of motorsport heritage.
“I’m honestly very proud of my country and myself,” Yevan said. It was a simple statement, but perhaps the most meaningful one. Because behind the achievement were years of work, countless hours of preparation, and the support of a nation that has followed his journey with growing pride. The podium represented not only what Yevan had achieved, but what it could inspire. For young Sri Lankans who dream of competing on global stages, Silverstone offered a powerful image. The Lion Flag was not there as a symbol of participation. It was there as a symbol of achievement.
Yevan David’s podium was a first, but it was never meant to be the final destination. He has already made history. Now, he wants more. The goal remains clear: more points, more podiums, and eventually, the first Formula 3 victory for Sri Lanka.

But regardless of what comes next, A young Sri Lankan driver standing at Silverstone, looking out at one of motorsport’s most famous circuits, with the flag of his country flying proudly above him. A moment when Sri Lanka found its place in the world of Formula racing.
We turned to Yevan himself to share his thoughts on this landmark achievement
1. Silverstone is a circuit that punishes hesitation and rewards precision. Where do you feel this podium was actually won?
Silverstone is one of the toughest tracks. It has a lot of high-speed corners, and it is a very historic circuit. For me, the turning point was really the last few laps. Every lap that I was able to stay ahead felt like a small victory. I was able to stay consistent and keep it together until the end without making any mistakes.
Honestly, one mistake and I probably would not have been in the position I ended up in. I’m very glad I was able to maintain my composure, stay calm, and execute when it mattered. In the end, I think the podium came from being able to stay focused and composed under pressure.
2. Fans back home call you the “Minister of Defense” because of how you defended your position. What’s your reaction to that?
It’s an incredible name to have, especially because “Minister of Defense” in Sri Lanka has a nice ring to it. I really like it because, in racing, defending is one of the hardest parts, just like overtaking. Race craft is something drivers are constantly trying to perfect, so to have a nickname like that is very cool.
It also connects back to my Sri Lankan background and the pride of representing the nation. It’s honestly such a great nickname to have, and I’m really glad the fans are enjoying it.

3. Sri Lanka is not traditionally part of the European single-seater pipeline, yet you’re now the first Sri Lankan to stand on an FIA F3 podium. How does it feel to carry that milestone?
Honestly, I can’t express how much this means to me. I’ve been watching F3 for such a long time, and for me to stand on an F3 podium during an F1 weekend was already something incredibly special.
But to do it for Sri Lanka, to have the Sri Lankan flag there, hear the commentators say my name and announce Sri Lanka, and know that people back home were watching, was such a surreal and grateful feeling.
The passion I have for this sport is beyond anything I can describe, and the support from Sri Lanka has been immense. It’s such a meaningful milestone for me, and I can’t wait to become the first Sri Lankan to win a Formula 3 race.
4. What’s next from here? What are the conversations like behind the scenes after a result like this, and what are you focused on improving going forward?
The next step is capitalizing on a weekend like this. We need to keep scoring points for the rest of the season, and that means qualifying in the top 10 consistently. Of course, we want to be fighting for wins, but to achieve that we need to keep building consistency, scoring points, fighting for more podiums, and hopefully getting that win.
For me, one of the biggest areas of focus is time management and making sure I don’t make mistakes in qualifying. I need to stay focused on those details, and as a team, we need to keep improving in those areas.
The main goal is to stay consistent, avoid unnecessary risks, and keep scoring until the end of the season. Then we can evaluate and look ahead to next year.

The Lion Flag now carries a new story in motorsport, and its journey is only beginning. With immense pride, an entire nation stands behind him, wishing him success as he continues to chase his dreams and write a legacy that future generations will remember.
