An Evening at Atmosphere Colombo

  • This time, the Next Stop team headed to Atmosphere at ITC Ratnadipa, and I have to say, the venue was the first thing that caught my attention. Before I had even looked at the menu, my immediate thought was, “I am going to take so many photos here!” And honestly, I did.

There is something about Atmosphere that makes you want to reach for your phone and capture every corner. The open-air rooftop setting, the contemporary design, the lights and the views come together to create a space that feels made for an evening out with friends. It has that perfect transition from a relaxed early-evening dinner spot to somewhere that feels increasingly lively as the night goes on.

Located on Level 01 of ITC Ratnadipa, Atmosphere is not trying to be just another restaurant. It brings together food, drinks, music and nightlife under one roof, and you can feel that intention from the moment you walk in. It is the kind of place where you can arrive for dinner and easily find yourself staying much longer than planned.

Once we settled in, it was time to see whether the food could match the venue. Atmosphere's culinary concept is built around three influences: Pacific Fire, Nikkei Precision and Sri Lankan Soul. Japanese techniques, South American influences and Sri Lankan flavours come together across a menu that focuses on fresh preparations, seafood, meats and robata-style cooking over fire.

For our evening, we started with the Chicken Yakitori with Sri Lankan Spice Glaze, and this was a great introduction to the restaurant's approach. The chicken had that lovely grilled, smoky quality you expect from yakitori, but the Sri Lankan spice glaze gave it a completely different personality. The sweet soy brought a rich savoury sweetness, while curry leaf added an unmistakably local aroma. Sesame brought a subtle nuttiness, and the lime at the end added just enough freshness to balance everything out.

What I liked most was the contrast. It wasn't simply sweet or spicy; there was a little bit of everything happening in each bite. The char from the grill, the sweetness of the glaze, the fragrance of curry leaf and that final citrus note worked surprisingly well together.

Next came the King Prawn Tempura with Wasabi Coconut Foam, and this was probably one of those dishes where the combination of ingredients immediately makes you curious. The tempura itself was light and crisp, allowing the king prawns to remain the star of the dish. The Wasabi Coconut Aioli added a creamy richness, but the wasabi gave it a sharper kick that stopped it from becoming too heavy. Then came the lime dust and chilli salt, which brought acidity and heat into the mix.

The combination of prawn, coconut, wasabi, lime and chilli might sound like a lot, but it comes together in a surprisingly balanced way. You get the crunch of the tempura first, followed by the sweetness of the prawn and then the creamy, spicy and citrusy flavours.

For something more substantial, we moved on to the Chicken & Corn Chimichurri. This dish features a grilled chicken supreme with charred corn salsa, green chilli chimichurri and smoked jus. The chicken was hearty and full of that smoky grilled flavour, while the charred corn added a natural sweetness and a little texture. The green chilli chimichurri was what really lifted the dish. Its fresh, herby character and gentle chilli heat cut through the richness of the chicken, while the smoked jus brought everything back to the deeper flavours of the grill.

It is a dish that manages to feel comforting while still having plenty of character. The combination of smoky chicken, sweet charred corn, fresh chimichurri and jus means that there is something different happening with every component.

And then, of course, came dessert. The Dark Chocolate & Miso Fondant with Chilli Chocolate Soil was probably the most unexpected combination of the evening. Dark chocolate and miso might not be the first pairing that comes to mind when you think about dessert, but the savoury depth of the miso works beautifully with the richness of the chocolate. The warm centre of the fondant makes it wonderfully indulgent, while the chilli chocolate soil adds texture and a subtle warmth. The chilli doesn't overwhelm the chocolate; instead, it gives the dessert an extra layer that keeps it interesting until the final bite. It also feels like a fitting ending to a menu that is all about bringing different influences together.

And because no evening at Atmosphere would be complete without exploring its drinks menu, there are two famous must-try cocktails to look out for: Magi Mochi and Dalu.

What stayed with me most about Atmosphere, though, was that it doesn't feel like the food, venue and entertainment are separate experiences. Everything is connected. You can sit down for dinner, enjoy a few plates, take far too many photos, as I predicted I would, and then stay on as the atmosphere becomes more energetic.

The restaurant's Pacific Fire, Nikkei Precision and Sri Lankan Soul concept is reflected throughout the food, from the sweet soy and curry leaf of the chicken yakitori to the wasabi, coconut and chilli combination of the prawn tempura. The Chicken & Corn brings in the freshness of chimichurri and the smokiness of the grill, while the dark chocolate and miso fondant ends things on a rich, unexpected note.

For the Next Stop team, Atmosphere turned out to be exactly what its name suggests: an experience where the setting is just as much a part of the evening as what arrives on the plate.
