“The Caged Girl” Launch Marks Turning Point in Sri Lanka’s Childcare Reform

A powerful and inspiring event took place on 4th September 2025 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo, with the launch of “The Caged Girl – A Journey to Justice”, a memoir by Nimali (Nimmu) Kumari — a former care leaver and now the Alternative Family and Foster Care Manager at Their Future Today. The event brought together national child protection leaders, civil society, and international partners to spotlight Nimmu’s courageous story of surviving abuse within institutional care and her fight for justice. Her book serves as a voice for thousands of children who face similar struggles in systems meant to protect them.

This event comes at a crucial time as Sri Lanka begins to shift from institutionalised childcare to family-based alternatives. In partnership with the Centre of Excellence in Alternative Care (India), TFT is actively engaging with national childcare services to help launch the country’s first foster care pilot programme. The evening marked a major step toward breaking stigmas around adoption, care-leaving, and alternative family care — sending a strong message that every child deserves a safe and loving home.
