  • Colombo has no shortage of restaurants, but finding a place that serves fresh seafood, celebrates Sri Lankan flavours and makes both locals and tourists feel equally welcome is always a treat. The Fat Crab is one such restaurant that has built its reputation around a simple idea: serving good seafood without compromising on freshness, flavour or quality.

Located in the heart of Colombo, The Fat Crab has become a familiar name among seafood lovers. With a long-standing presence in the city’s dining scene, the restaurant has established itself as a destination for those who enjoy authentic seafood, particularly Sri Lanka’s famous mud crabs. Under the ownership of Eranga Dias, the restaurant offers diners an opportunity to experience the flavours of Sri Lankan seafood in a welcoming setting.

One of the most interesting things about The Fat Crab is its commitment to locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant places importance on supporting local fishermen, sourcing prawns from them and minimising the use of frozen seafood. Most of its mud crabs are kept live, helping maintain the freshness that makes such a difference when preparing seafood dishes.

What makes the restaurant particularly appealing is its welcoming approach. Whether you are a Sri Lankan craving a familiar crab curry or a tourist hoping to experience the country’s seafood culture, The Fat Crab offers something for everyone. Reservations are welcome, but walk-in customers are equally encouraged, with no strict requirement to book a table in advance.

The ambience adds another enjoyable element to the experience. The warm wooden tables, comfortable green seating and tasteful interiors create a relaxed yet sophisticated dining environment. It feels suitable for a casual lunch, a family gathering or an evening out with friends. There is a sense of comfort that allows guests to enjoy their meals without feeling rushed.

With plans to expand to Hyderabad, India, by 2027, The Fat Crab is also looking to take its seafood experience beyond Sri Lanka. But beyond the ambience and the restaurant’s story, the real highlight is undoubtedly the food. The meal began with the Seafood Chowder, a comforting introduction to the seafood experience ahead. The soup offered a creamy, smooth consistency with a pleasant seafood flavour that was neither too strong nor overpowering. Its richness made it satisfying, while the seasoning helped bring the flavours together.

It was a lovely way to begin the meal, especially for someone who enjoys creamy seafood soups. Although a little more depth in flavour could have made it even better, it was still an enjoyable starter that prepared the appetite for what followed.

Next came the Baked Crab, an appetiser that offered a rich and satisfying seafood experience. The combination of crab and creamy flavours worked particularly well, delivering a savoury taste with a gentle richness.

What made this dish enjoyable was how the crab flavour remained noticeable without being overwhelmed by the other ingredients. It was comforting, indulgent and a good choice for anyone who prefers seafood with a milder flavour profile. While it was slightly rich, the overall taste made it a worthwhile addition to the meal. The Florida Salad with Prawns was easily one of the most refreshing surprises of the dining experience.

The combination of prawns, fresh fruits and a creamy dressing created a delightful balance between sweetness, freshness and savoury flavours. The prawns added a satisfying seafood element, while the fruitiness brought a refreshing contrast. Every mouthful offered something enjoyable, with the sweetness complementing the prawns rather than overpowering them. It was light enough to enjoy before the main course yet flavourful enough to leave a lasting impression.

For anyone who enjoys a combination of sweet and savoury flavours, this salad is definitely worth trying. If there is one dish that deserves the spotlight at The Fat Crab, it is undoubtedly the Crab Curry with Roast Paan. This was the absolute highlight of the entire dining experience, and easily the dish I would return for.

The crab curry delivered everything one could hope for from a delicious Sri Lankan seafood meal. The rich, aromatic gravy carried a wonderful combination of spices, with just the right balance of heat and flavour. Every mouthful was packed with that familiar Sri Lankan taste that makes a good crab curry so irresistible.

The crab itself was delicious, and the flavours of the curry complemented its natural sweetness beautifully. Nothing felt unnecessarily complicated. It was simply a well-prepared dish that celebrated the richness of Sri Lankan cooking. But what truly elevated the experience was the roast paan.

Dipping the bread into the curry and allowing it to absorb the flavourful gravy was an absolute delight. The combination was incredibly satisfying, bringing together the richness of the curry and the comforting taste of traditional Sri Lankan bread. This is exactly the kind of meal that tourists visiting Sri Lanka should experience. It introduces them to the country’s love for spices, seafood and traditional food combinations in the most delicious way possible. For Sri Lankans, meanwhile, it offers the familiar satisfaction of a proper crab curry. Even after finishing the meal, this was the dish that stayed on my mind. I am already waiting for the opportunity to return and enjoy it again. It was genuinely that delicious. Without question, the Crab Curry with Roast Paan is a must-try. To finish the meal, the Chocolate Mousse offered a pleasant change from the rich seafood flavours. Smooth, creamy and satisfyingly chocolatey, it provided a comforting conclusion to the dining experience. The sweetness was enjoyable without becoming too overwhelming, making it a suitable dessert after a flavourful main course.

It was a simple yet satisfying way to end the meal. The Fat Crab delivers an enjoyable seafood experience by combining locally sourced ingredients, Sri Lankan flavours and a welcoming atmosphere. Its appeal lies in making quality seafood accessible to both local diners and international visitors. While every dish had something enjoyable to offer, the Florida Salad with Prawns and the Crab Curry with Roast Paan were the clear favourites. For anyone planning a visit, my strongest recommendation would be to save enough room for the crab curry. It is the kind of dish that makes a restaurant visit memorable and gives you a reason to return. And in my case, that next visit cannot come soon enough.
