Insidious: Out of the Further is the sixth film in the Insidious franchise and introduces a new family while continuing to explore the supernatural mythology established in the earlier movies. Directed and written by Jacob Chase, the film returns to The Further, the dark spiritual realm inhabited by ghosts, demons and other dangerous entities. While previous films focused heavily on the Lambert family and paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, this story places Gemma Hall and her daughter Maya at the centre of a new supernatural threat.
Amelia Eve stars as Gemma Hall, a young mother raising her daughter Maya in the same house where Gemma spent part of her childhood. Her return to the family home forces her to confront memories she has tried to leave behind. Those memories gradually become connected to increasingly disturbing supernatural events, and Gemma discovers that her family history is far more closely tied to The Further than she previously understood.
Gemma learns that she possesses the ability to astral project. Astral projection has appeared throughout the Insidious franchise, most famously through characters such as Josh and Dalton Lambert. Gemma's ability is different, however. She is what the film describes as a courier, a person capable not only of travelling into The Further but also of bringing things from that realm into the physical world.
This makes Gemma extremely valuable to the entities trapped inside The Further. Spirits that would normally struggle to enter the world of the living suddenly have a possible way out. Gemma therefore becomes more than someone being haunted by supernatural forces. Her existence represents a potential doorway between the living and the dead.
Gemma initially has little understanding of what is happening. Her experiences become increasingly frightening as she encounters disturbing figures and begins travelling into The Further. The supernatural events are also connected to unresolved memories involving her mother, Ingrid. What Gemma initially sees as frightening incidents gradually develops into a much larger mystery involving her family and the unusual ability she has inherited.
Gemma eventually encounters Lester, Edna and Patsy, elderly followers of Cyrus Lam. They are not simply random spirits or victims of The Further. They are living followers who deliberately use astral projection to enter the supernatural realm. Their activities form part of Cyrus's plan and help reveal that Gemma is dealing with something more organised than an ordinary haunting.
Gemma's search for answers also brings her into contact with Clare, played by Maisie Richardson Sellers. Clare is a tattoo artist and medium with supernatural abilities of her own. She becomes an important link between Gemma and Elise Rainier, the paranormal investigator who has played a major role throughout the Insidious series.
Elise is dead by this point in the franchise timeline, but death has never completely removed her from the world of Insidious. Lin Shaye returns to the role, with Elise operating from within The Further. Clare acts as a conduit through which Elise can communicate with Gemma and help her understand the danger surrounding her.
Elise's involvement provides an important connection between the new characters and the earlier films. She understands The Further better than almost anyone and recognises how dangerous Gemma's courier ability could become in the wrong hands. Her knowledge helps Gemma understand that the supernatural events surrounding her are connected to a deliberate attempt to cross the boundary separating the dead from the living.
Brandon Perea plays Nick Mendoza, Gemma's boyfriend and a police officer. Nick initially represents the more grounded side of the story. Gemma's descriptions of astral projection, spirits and The Further are difficult for him to understand, particularly as the supernatural events become increasingly extreme. However, he eventually becomes directly involved in the danger and attempts to protect Gemma and Maya.
The main antagonist is Cyrus Lam, played by Sam Spruell. Cyrus is a former cult leader who is already dead and trapped within The Further. He has followers who remain loyal to him and is searching for a way to escape the supernatural realm. Gemma's ability provides exactly the opportunity he needs.
Cyrus recognises that a courier could potentially transport him from The Further into the physical world. His plan therefore goes beyond simply frightening or possessing Gemma. He wants to exploit her ability to break through the barrier between the two realms. If successful, his escape could also make it possible for other dangerous entities to cross into the world of the living.
The mystery surrounding Cyrus becomes closely connected to Gemma's childhood and her mother, Ingrid, played by Laura Gordon. Gemma eventually learns that Ingrid possessed the same unusual courier ability. Cyrus had previously targeted Ingrid because he wanted to use her powers to escape The Further.
This revelation changes Gemma's understanding of her childhood. Her mother's experiences were connected to the supernatural world, and the trauma Gemma has carried is tied directly to Cyrus. Ingrid ultimately died by suicide rather than allow Cyrus to use her as a means of escaping The Further.
Gemma therefore discovers that her abilities are inherited rather than an unexplained supernatural accident. More importantly, the inheritance does not end with her. Maya also possesses the courier ability.
That discovery dramatically increases the danger. Cyrus does not need Gemma if Maya can provide another route into the physical world. Maya becomes central to his plan, turning Gemma's struggle into both a supernatural battle and a mother's attempt to prevent her daughter from suffering because of the same inherited ability that destroyed much of her own family.
Cyrus eventually uses Maya as part of his attempt to cross into the physical world. His plan threatens to bring other demonic entities with him, potentially turning the connection between The Further and reality into something far more dangerous than the temporary crossings seen earlier in the story.

The climax forces Gemma to use the very power that has made her a target. Instead of simply trying to escape The Further, she must understand how her courier ability works well enough to turn it against Cyrus. Gemma ultimately transports the demon filled house into The Further and manipulates the other entities into believing that Cyrus has betrayed them.
The plan works. The demons turn against Cyrus and destroy him, preventing him from achieving the escape he has been planning. Gemma's victory comes not from defeating the supernatural world through physical strength but from learning how to control the connection between the two realms.
This conclusion also completes an important part of Gemma's personal journey. Her experiences force her to confront the truth about Ingrid, understand the origins of her abilities and recognise that Maya has inherited the same supernatural connection. The family history that once existed mainly as painful memories becomes essential to understanding how Gemma can protect her daughter.
Amelia Eve carries much of the film as Gemma Hall. The story is largely experienced through Gemma's perspective, from her first frightening encounters to her growing understanding of The Further. Gemma works as a protagonist because her struggle involves more than surviving ghosts. She is trying to understand her mother, protect Maya and prevent an inherited supernatural ability from controlling her family's future.
Brandon Perea's Nick Mendoza provides a more ordinary perspective on the increasingly strange events. His initial difficulty accepting what Gemma is experiencing creates tension between the supernatural world and everyday reality. As the danger becomes impossible to ignore, Nick becomes more directly involved in protecting Gemma and Maya.
Maisie Richardson Sellers plays Clare as an important supernatural ally. Rather than simply duplicating Gemma's abilities, Clare serves as a medium and a connection to Elise. Her presence allows the story to introduce new characters while maintaining a direct relationship with the mythology established by the earlier films.
Lin Shaye's return as Elise Rainier is particularly significant for longtime fans. Elise remains one of the defining characters of the Insidious franchise, and her knowledge of The Further allows her to connect Gemma's story with the larger supernatural world of the series. Although Elise is no longer alive, The Further provides a believable way within the franchise's mythology for her to remain involved.
Sam Spruell gives the film its central antagonist as Cyrus Lam. Cyrus differs from a simple demonic presence because his threat involves planning, followers and a specific interest in Gemma's family. His attempt to use the courier ability turns the supernatural danger into something that stretches across generations.

Island Austin plays Maya Hall, whose importance grows considerably as the story develops. Initially she appears to be the child Gemma must protect from the supernatural events around them. The revelation that Maya has inherited the courier ability changes her role and shows that the Hall family's connection to The Further may continue beyond Gemma.
Laura Gordon appears as Ingrid, Gemma's mother. Although Ingrid's history is largely connected to events that happened before the main story, she is essential to understanding both Gemma and Cyrus. Her experiences establish that Cyrus's interest in the Hall family began before Gemma fully understood her own powers.
The strongest idea in Insidious: Out of the Further is the introduction of the courier ability. The Insidious films have always treated astral projection as a dangerous connection between the physical world and The Further, but Gemma's ability changes the consequences. Travelling into The Further is dangerous enough. Being able to bring something back makes the boundary between the two worlds much less secure.
The film also uses this idea to explore inheritance and family trauma. Gemma's supernatural ability connects her to Ingrid, while Maya's inheritance suggests that Gemma must deal with the problem rather than simply escape it. The supernatural threat therefore becomes closely tied to the relationship between three generations of the same family.
The film still contains elements that will be familiar to anyone who has followed the Insidious franchise, including astral projection, frightening spirits, dark journeys through The Further and characters struggling to understand supernatural experiences. Some viewers may therefore find parts of the story predictable. The amount of explanation devoted to couriers, Cyrus and the rules surrounding The Further can also make the mythology feel more complicated than necessary.
Even so, Insidious: Out of the Further finds a new direction within familiar territory. By introducing Gemma, Maya and the courier ability while bringing Elise Rainier back into the story, the sixth film expands the mythology without completely separating itself from what came before. At its centre is a story about a mother confronting the truth about her past, understanding what she has inherited and trying to prevent the same supernatural forces from controlling her daughter's future.
