  • The BLOOM TOGETHER National Camp 2026, organized by the Branch for the Differently Abled Guides of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, was the kind of initiative that leaves one with a quiet yet powerful feeling. Over three days and two nights, what unfolded was not just a camp, but a heartfelt celebration of courage, creativity, friendship, and belonging.

Held at the MJF Centre in Moratuwa, the camp brought together 120 differently abled Guides and their leaders from five provinces across Sri Lanka. The venue itself, thoughtfully chosen for its accessibility, became more than just a space, it became a home where every participant felt seen, supported, and valued.

From the moment the campers arrived, there was a sense of excitement in the air. Bags were unpacked, introductions were exchanged, and soon enough, strangers became teammates. The Guides and their leaders were divided into four patrols under two sub-camps, a structure that encouraged teamwork while gently nurturing leadership skills. It wasn’t long before laughter echoed through the grounds, proving that connection doesn’t need time, it simply needs openness.

The camp officially began with an opening ceremony that set the tone for everything that followed. At its heart was a simple yet meaningful activity: tree planting. With saplings donated by the Ministry of Environment, the Guides planted each tree with care, embodying the theme “BLOOM TOGETHER.” It wasn’t just about environmental responsibility; it was a quiet promise of growth, of unity, and of a future rooted in hope.

That same evening brought one of the most anticipated highlights of the camp, the Fashion Show. But this was no ordinary showcase. For nearly ten months, these young Guides had worked tirelessly, alongside their parents and caregivers, to design and create their own costumes using recyclable materials. Each outfit carried a story, a burst of imagination, and a message of sustainability.

As they walked the runway, there was something truly unforgettable about their presence. It wasn’t just confidence, it was pride, resilience, and joy all shining through at once. The audience watched in admiration as creativity came alive in the most beautiful, unexpected ways. The Chief Guest for the evening, Ms. Stephanie Siriwardene, was visibly moved, praising the participants for their talent and self-expression. For many, it wasn’t just a performance, it was a moment of being celebrated exactly as they are.

Day Two began on a refreshing note, with a calming yoga session that gently woke both body and mind. Dressed in vibrant orange camp T-shirts sponsored by Vogue Tex, the campers set out on a nature walk through the Butterfly Garden. The sight of them, bright, energetic, and curious, added a special kind of colour to the morning.

The walk itself became a learning experience, as the Guides explored different plants and collected natural materials along the way. Later, back at the campsite, these simple elements were transformed into creative pieces of art. It was a reminder that beauty often lies in the little things we overlook.

The afternoon brought a different kind of inspiration. In a session titled “Know Your Power,” Ms. Yohani Felsinger, Director of Human Resources of Cinnamon Life, encouraged the girls to think beyond limitations and imagine their futures. It wasn’t just about careers; it was about self-belief. Through her words, she reminded them that their potential is not defined by challenges, but by the strength they carry within. As the session concluded, gift packs sponsored by Cinnamon Life were distributed, but what lingered most was the sense of possibility that had been planted in each young mind.

That evening, the campfire lit up more than just the night sky, it reignited a cherished tradition that had been absent for nearly a decade. There is something timeless about gathering around a fire, sharing songs, laughter, and stories. The Chief Guest, Dr Semih Lütfü Turgut, Ambassador of Türkiye to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, added a special warmth to the evening by interacting with the campers and joining in their activities.

What made the night truly special was its inclusivity. Former Chief Commissioners, members of the association, leaders, and campers all came together, not as separate groups, but as one community. The campfire supper, generously sponsored by Paan Paan, became a shared experience of joy, one that bridged generations and created lasting memories.

By Day Three, there was a quiet understanding that the end was near, but the energy remained just as vibrant. The morning began with an exercise session followed by a nutrition awareness programme, offering practical lessons that the campers could carry into their daily lives.

One of the most engaging activities of the day was the treasure hunt at a nearby supermarket. With a limited budget, the Guides were challenged to identify and purchase nutritious food items for lunch. It was a simple concept, but one that blended fun with much-needed real-life skills. As they returned, excitedly sharing their choices and experiences, it was clear that learning had taken place most naturally.

Later, as parents arrived at the campsite, there was a noticeable shift in atmosphere. Pride, joy, and a hint of nostalgia filled the air. The campers worked together to dismantle tents and clean the grounds, demonstrating responsibility and teamwork, skills that had quietly developed over the past three days.

At the closing ceremony, Ms. Nirmalee William, Deputy Chief Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the leaders, volunteers, and organizing committee whose dedication made the camp possible. Her words reflected what many felt that this was more than an event; it was a collective effort built on care and commitment.

Commissioner Ms. Dilhani Haputantri beautifully summed up the purpose of the camp. The goal, she said, was simple yet deeply meaningful: to give girls with disabilities the opportunity to experience the joy, adventure, and life skills of Girl Guiding. And in that mission, the camp had succeeded beyond expectations. Despite initial concerns about unpredictable weather, the skies remained kind throughout the three days. But perhaps the true blessing was not the sunshine, it was the happiness that radiated from the campers themselves. As the camp came to an end, one request echoed again and again: “Can we have a 20-day camp next time?” It was a lighthearted wish, but one that spoke volumes about the impact of the experience. Because sometimes, words are not necessary. Sometimes, it is the laughter, the sparkle in the eyes, and the unfiltered smiles that tell the real story.

The BLOOM TOGETHER National Camp 2026 was not just a milestone for the Branch for the Differently Abled Guides, it was a reminder of what happens when we create spaces that truly include, uplift, and empower. It showed us that when given the opportunity, every girl can bloom in her own way. And as these young Guides return to their everyday lives, they carry with them something far greater than memories, they carry confidence, friendships, and the quiet belief that they, too, can shine. Perhaps one day, as Ms. Haputantri so beautifully expressed, they will become the shining stars of our society. But for those who witnessed this camp, one thing is already certain, they are shining, here and now.
