Sri Lanka’s premier female ensemble, the Soul Sounds Choir, directed by Soundarie David Rodrigo, aims to capture that spirit through its latest production, The Pop Moment. The journey begins in the 1970s, an era defined by the rise of disco, when music became synonymous with celebration and self-expression. The Bee Gees dominated the charts with enduring classics such as How Deep Is Your Love, Stayin' Alive and Night Fever, while ABBA captivated audiences with timeless hits including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia and Take a Chance on Me. It was not only the music that defined the decade. Platform shoes, sequins, flared trousers, bold colours and striking prints reflected the exuberance of the era. Music and fashion became inseparable, creating a cultural movement whose influence continues to resonate today. These songs were designed to get people dancing, and they still do, proving that great music transcends generations.

Renowned for creating innovative musical experiences for Sri Lankan audiences, Soul Sounds, under the direction of Soundarie David Rodrigo, invites listeners on a nostalgic journey through the decades of pop music. The show will take place on the 12th of July at the Lionel Wendt Theatre and will celebrate the artists, songs and defining moments that shaped generations.
