Buddhika, Founder, Salon Catalyst
THE FOUNDER BY YASHMITHA SRITHERAN
In a candid and heartfelt conversation, Buddhika, founder of Salon Catalyst, reflects on his unexpected path into the beauty industry, the sacrifices that shaped his journey, and the deep human connections that continue to inspire his work. From humble beginnings in Kegalle to building a salon grounded in confidence, care, and community, his story is a powerful testament to resilience, passion, and purpose.
Let’s start from the beginning, how did you first enter the beauty industry?
Honestly, my journey into the beauty industry happened completely by chance. I simply discovered it one day, and from that very moment, I felt a spark. The creativity, the freedom, and the power to transform someone’s confidence truly drew me in. Almost instantly, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue. Starting out was far from easy. I came from nothing and had to fight for every step forward. At one point, I even sold my mother’s gold bangles just to get my dream off the ground. That sacrifice still stays with me; it is a constant reminder of why I can never give up. I was also blessed with four incredible friends, Keerthi, Dev, Sachitra, and Sharmal, who believed in me during the toughest times. Without their support, I honestly don’t know if I would have made it this far. Looking back, every struggle, sacrifice, and long hour of hard work was worth it. Today, I have the privilege of doing what I love and making a difference in people’s lives every single day.
Was becoming a salon founder always your dream, or did it happen unexpectedly?
To be honest, becoming a salon founder was not always part of my plan. In the beginning, I was simply focused on learning, improving my skills, understanding clients, and growing within the salons where I worked. However, as the years passed, something within me began to shift. I realized that I did not just want to work in a salon, I wanted to build one of my own. Working in different salons taught me so much, and I am truly grateful for that experience. Yet deep down, I longed for a space where I could fully express my vision and creativity without limitations. I wanted to create an atmosphere that felt personal, warm, and inspiring, not only for clients, but for my team as well. What truly motivated me was the connection I built with my clients. There is something incredibly powerful about watching someone’s face light up after a transformation. That quiet moment when they look at themselves in the mirror, sometimes smiling, sometimes emotional, means everything to me. Those reactions made me realize that this is not just a job; it is my passion. It is how I connect with people. The journey to opening my own salon was far from easy. There were sleepless nights, financial struggles, and moments when I questioned everything. At times, I felt as though I had lost almost everything, I had worked so hard to build. Yet even during those difficult days, the dream remained alive in my heart. It constantly reminded me why I started. In the end, becoming a salon founder was not a childhood dream, it became a calling. Once I understood that, I was willing to sacrifice, work harder, and push through every challenge to turn it into reality.
What first inspired you to choose hair and beauty as your career path?
Honestly, it has always been about people. Early on, I understood this industry is not just about hair, but about human connection. Many clients sit in my chair seeking more than a haircut; they arrive carrying self-doubt or personal struggles. I have seen how a simple transformation can lift their energy and restore confidence. When they look in the mirror and smile, it becomes something deeper than appearance; it is about how they feel inside. Watching someone leave standing taller, feeling seen and valued, reminds me why I chose this path and keeps my passion alive every single day.
Before becoming the founder of Salon Catalyst, who was Buddhika? What was your journey like?
Before becoming the founder of Salon Catalyst, I was simply a “game kollek,” a village boy from Kegalle with big dreams and very humble beginnings. My journey did not begin in a salon; it started in a shoe shop in my hometown, where I worked during my early years. Right next to the shoe shop was a salon. I used to watch the stylists at work, the way they carried themselves, the creativity in their hands, and the way clients walked out with smiles on their faces. I admired them from a distance. There was something about that environment that always captured my attention. The salon belonged to a friend’s brother, and he noticed my interest. He encouraged me to seriously consider learning hair and beauty, not just as a hobby, but as a profession. That encouragement changed my life. Sometimes, all you need is one person who sees your potential before you see it in yourself. From there, I took a leap of faith. I moved to Kiribathgoda and later to Colombo 7, where I gained greater exposure and experience. Those years shaped me. I worked hard, learned discipline, refined my skills, and came to understand the true demands of the industry. Looking back, my journey was not glamorous, it was built step by step with patience, sacrifice, and belief. Every stage, from the shoe shop in Kegalle to the salons in Colombo, helped shape the person and professional I am today.
What do you think most salons are missing, and how is Salon Catalyst different?
I believe what many salons are missing is genuine human connection. Too often, it becomes just about providing a service, a haircut, a color, or a treatment, without truly seeing the person sitting in the chair. At Salon Catalyst, we do things differently. Every client is unique, every story matter, and we make it our mission to treat each person with dignity and care. We do not simply provide a service; we create a safe and welcoming space where people can truly be themselves. I have seen clients walk in feeling stressed, anxious, or exhausted by life, and by the time they leave, their shoulders feel lighter, their smiles brighter, and their spirits renewed. That is the real magic.

What kind of experience do you want every client to walk away with?
For me, it is about much more than just a haircut or a color. It is about making every client feel truly seen, heard, and cared for. Sometimes it is a warm conversation, a gentle touch, or simply a quiet moment where they can focus entirely on themselves. That small pause, that feeling of being valued, can make all the difference. I want every client to leave knowing they were more than just a customer. They were cared for, uplifted, and reminded of their own worth.
That is the kind of experience that stays with people long after they walk out the door, and that is what we strive to create at Salon Catalyst every single day.
Can you share one transformation story that truly touched you?
If I am being honest, every client transformation touches me, even if it is just a small trim. People often think it is “just a haircut,” but I have seen how even the smallest change can completely shift someone’s mood and confidence. If a client walks in with “Monday morning” energy and leaves with full “main character” confidence, that is exactly what I hope to see. That moment when they look in the mirror and something changes, their smile grows, their chin lifts, and you can see their confidence come alive, means everything to me. That is when I realized I am not simply cutting hair. What we do can be truly therapeutic, and I witness that magic every single day. Every client has a story, and being even a small part of their transformation is something I never take for granted.
What advice would you give young entrepreneurs who want to start their own brand?
First, don’t see everyone around you as competition. In our industry, unity and harmony matter more than rivalry. Other salons are not enemies; they are part of the same creative community. When we support and uplift one another, the entire industry grows stronger. Second, discipline is everything. Talent alone is never enough, consistency, hard work, and commitment carry you through the days when motivation fades. Teamwork is essential because no brand succeeds alone. Stay grounded, lead with kindness and professionalism, and take pride in your environment. Build your brand with integrity, passion, and unity, and success will follow naturally.
Five years from now, where do you see Salon Catalyst, and what legacy do you want to build?
For me, every day is a new beginning filled with fresh dreams and goals. I measure success not by years, but by growth. My greatest role model is myself; each year, I strive to be better than before, and as I grow, my brand grows with me. I began this journey with just Rs. 500, fuelled by belief and determination. In five years, I see Salon Catalyst as a respected space built on integrity and purpose. More than expansion, I want to create a legacy of kindness, unity, and authenticity, leaving a meaningful and positive impact behind.
