The Future Is Here: Sri Lanka’s Young Leaders Take Centre Stage at the 7th Youth Top40 Awards 2026.

At a time when national conversations often centre on what the next generation will achieve, the 7th New Generation Sri Lanka Youth Top40 Awards 2026 delivered a compelling message: Sri Lanka's future is not something waiting to unfold, it is already being shaped by the country's young leaders. Held on the 28^th of July 2026 at Shangri-La Colombo, the prestigious awards ceremony honoured 40 outstanding young Sri Lankans whose achievements are making a meaningful impact across business, entrepreneurship, public service, media, education, technology, the arts, social development and community leadership. Organised by New Generation Sri Lanka, the youth arm of Women in Management (WIM) Global, the annual awards marked seven consecutive years of recognising young individuals who exemplify leadership, innovation, resilience and a strong commitment to social responsibility. This year's theme, "Future Forward: Integrity First," underscored the belief that tomorrow's leaders must be guided not only by ambition and success, but by ethics, accountability and service to society. More than 200 guests attended the ceremony, including His Excellency Semih Lütfü Turgut, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Sri Lanka; Mr. Eran Wickramaratne, Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket and former Member of Parliament; members of the diplomatic community, corporate leaders, professionals and youth advocates.

RECOGNITION BASED ON MERIT

The Youth Top40 Awards has earned recognition for its transparent and inclusive selection process, designed to ensure that talent, not privilege, determines success. Nominations remained open for six weeks, allowing both self-nominations and nominations by third parties. Staying true to its commitment to equal opportunity, New Generation Sri Lanka charged no nomination or processing fees, making participation accessible to young people from all backgrounds. This year's programme attracted 198 nominations from every district in Sri Lanka, while also welcoming applications from Sri Lankan youth living overseas. The diversity of applicants reflected the country's broad spectrum of professions, industries, communities and ethnic backgrounds. Following four rounds of rigorous evaluation, an independent judging panel selected the final 40 award recipients based on their professional achievements, leadership potential, contribution to society and commitment to creating positive change.

REDEFINING THE PURPOSE OF AWARDS

Beyond celebrating achievement, the organisers emphasised that recognition should inspire continued responsibility and service. In an era when the credibility of awards is increasingly scrutinised, New Generation Sri Lanka believes professional recognition must represent more than prestige. ‘To be responsible and ethical, you need to carry an award forward, not stop with a recognition,’ remains the guiding philosophy of the Youth Top40 Awards. The initiative seeks to restore trust in professional recognition by encouraging every award recipient to become an ambassador for positive change within their communities and professions.

HISTORIC LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENT

One of the evening's defining moments was the appointment of Sayumi Jayawardena as the first female Chairperson of New Generation Sri Lanka. A humanitarian professional, youth leader and development practitioner at UNDP Sri Lanka, Sayumi has built an impressive career in international relations, climate action, gender equality and youth empowerment. Having joined the organisation as a founding member and later serving as Honorary Secretary, she has played an instrumental role in advancing national dialogue, civic engagement, youth participation and policy advocacy. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for the organisation and reinforces its commitment to ensuring young women not only participate in leadership but actively shape it.

A JOURNEY OF OPPORTUNITY

Outgoing Chairman Dr. Dilmika Srimal shared a personal reflection on his own leadership journey, illustrating the transformative role New Generation Sri Lanka has played in his life. “As a young boy from a rural village in Hambantota, I was able to come to Colombo, build my confidence, discover my potential, develop leadership skills and eventually lead Sri Lanka's first professional youth organisation because of the mentorship I received from New Generation,” he said. His story reflected the organisation's broader mission of creating opportunities for young people regardless of their social or geographical backgrounds.

LEADERSHIP BEYOND BORDERS

The awards ceremony also served as a platform for broader discussions on leadership, accountability and national development. Delivering the keynote address on, "Leadership Beyond Borders: Creating Opportunities Through Global Partnerships," Ambassador Semih Lütfü Turgut highlighted the importance of international collaboration and expanding global opportunities for Sri Lanka's emerging leaders. Addressing the audience on "Accountability and Values We Need as a Nation," Mr. Eran Wickramaratne stressed the need for integrity, responsibility and ethical leadership as essential foundations for the country's future progress.

A CALL TO EMPOWER TODAY'S YOUTH

Founder of New Generation Sri Lanka, Dr. Sulochana Segera, urged individuals, organisations and the private sector to take greater responsibility for supporting today's young people rather than waiting for change to emerge through political leadership. "It is time we do not await politicians to make the change. It is time we fulfil our responsibilities towards our present youth," she said. She challenged society to examine whether sufficient space is being created for young leaders to emerge. "We speak about the future without committing to the present. Youth are leaving the country not because of a lack of opportunities, but because our generation continues to hold on to power and the spotlight instead of creating space for young people to lead." Dr. Segera added that empowering youth is a shared national responsibility. "Neighbouring countries are creating pathways for young people to shine, while we continue to lose our young talent. The time has come to trust, empower and create opportunities for the next generation."

The evening celebrated not only achievement but also stories of resilience, courage and transformation. Through inspiring performances, personal journeys and the recognition of excellence, the 7th Youth Top40 Awards 2026 showcased a generation determined not to wait for change, but to lead it.
