Taj Samudra Colombo has strengthened its commitment to community care and sustainability through a compassionate initiative that supports the feeding of stray dogs across the city. Inspired by the enduring legacy of industrialist Ratan Tata, whose well known affection for stray animals reflected a deep sense of humanity, the hotel has quietly carried forward a programme that combines environmental responsibility with kindness for nearly two years. The initiative is conducted in collaboration with the Animal Wellness Trust Sri Lanka, an organisation dedicated to animal rescue and welfare. Founded by Dr. Krishanthi Rondon Fuentes and Mr. Hector Fuentes, the trust has built a reputation for its sustained efforts to protect and care for vulnerable animals. Through this partnership, Taj Samudra Colombo contributes to a daily feeding programme that reaches hundreds of stray dogs living on the streets of Colombo.
At the heart of the effort is a simple but impactful practice. Surplus food from the hotel’s buffet operations is carefully set aside instead of being discarded. This approach ensures that food waste is significantly reduced while also providing nourishment to animals that would otherwise struggle to find regular meals. The process is managed with strict attention to hygiene and safety, reflecting the hotel’s high operational standards. A dedicated Kitchen Stewarding team, led by Mr. Kasun Gomes and supported by the chefs of the Ports of Call kitchen, plays a crucial role in the initiative. The team carefully identifies suitable leftover food, ensures that it is handled in a safe and hygienic manner, and prepares it for collection. Their work begins early each day, demonstrating a level of commitment that extends beyond routine responsibilities.
The Animal Wellness Trust team collects the prepared food in the early hours of the morning and distributes it to stray dogs across various parts of Colombo. This coordinated effort ensures that the food reaches the animals in a timely manner, helping to maintain their health and wellbeing. Regular feeding not only improves the physical condition of the dogs but also contributes to a calmer environment in public spaces. Well-fed animals are less likely to scavenge aggressively or cause disturbances, which benefits pedestrians and street vendors alike. In this way, the initiative supports a balanced coexistence between people and stray animals, addressing both welfare concerns and public convenience. It reflects a thoughtful approach to urban challenges where humane solutions can create positive outcomes for all.
Speaking about the programme, Mr. Samrat Datta, Area Director for Taj Sri Lanka and Maldives and General Manager of Taj Samudra Colombo, emphasised the broader purpose behind the effort. He noted that sharing food that would otherwise go to waste allows the hotel to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these animals while contributing positively to the community. He also highlighted that the initiative embodies the philosophy of Tajness, which centres on genuine care, concern, and kindness in every aspect of service.
