SOUTH ASIAN TRAVEL AWARDS 2026 TO MARK A DECADE OF TOURISM EXCELLENCE IN THE MALDIVES

The South Asian Travel Awards (SATA) 2026 is set to mark a significant milestone as the regional travel and hospitality awards programme celebrates its 10th edition in the Maldives this October, bringing together tourism and hospitality professionals, businesses and industry stakeholders from across South Asia. Established in 2016, SATA serves as a regional platform recognizing achievements across the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors. Over the past decade, the awards have expanded to encompass a diverse range of businesses and professionals, including hotels and resorts, airlines, travel agencies, tourism operators and individual hospitality professionals. The 2026 edition features more than 50 award categories, with participation spanning Sri Lanka, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The milestone edition follows an extensive regional evaluation programme that took SATA's independent jury across six South Asian countries, reinforcing the regional scope of the awards.
Regional Evaluation Across Six Countries
The SATA 2026 evaluation programme began in Colombo on June 5 before continuing to Bengaluru and New Delhi in India, Kathmandu in Nepal, Thimphu in Bhutan and Dhaka in Bangladesh. The month-long evaluation journey concluded in the Maldives on the 6th of July. Covering six countries and seven cities, the programme involved nine regional judges tasked with evaluating nominees across the participating destinations. The evaluation process included presentations by nominated properties and tourism organizations before an independent jury, together with technical assessments and on-site inspections where applicable. According to SATA, nominees were assessed on criteria including quality, operational excellence, sustainability, guest experience and innovation. The milestone 10th edition has attracted nominations across more than 50 award categories, with entries representing a wide range of businesses and professionals from across South Asia's travel and hospitality industry. The nominations span categories covering hotels and resorts, travel companies, tourism experiences and individual hospitality professionals.

Jury Assessment and Public Voting
The SATA selection process combines professional industry evaluation with public participation. According to SATA, 60% of the final score is determined through independent jury evaluation, while the remaining 40% is based on verified online public voting. The organization states that the online voting process uses email verification to authenticate votes. The jury comprises professionals with experience across different areas of the tourism and hospitality industries, bringing regional expertise to the evaluation process. Through presentations, assessments and inspections where applicable, the judging process is designed to evaluate nominees against established criteria alongside the public voting component.
New Categories Introduced for 2026
Marking its 10th edition, SATA has expanded its individual recognition categories with the introduction of Outstanding Chef and Outstanding Young Hotelier (Under 40 years). According to SATA's official criteria, the Outstanding Chef category considers areas including culinary expertise, cooking techniques, menu innovation, leadership and operational management. The Outstanding Young Hotelier category focuses on leadership and innovation in hotel operations, contribution to team and guest experience, and commitment to professional development within the hospitality industry. The two categories broaden the awards' recognition of individual talent within the sector, complementing the extensive range of categories recognizing hotels, resorts, travel companies and other tourism organizations.
Maldives to Host the Milestone Edition
The Maldives will take centre stage for SATA's 10th edition, with the main event scheduled to take place in Malé on the 7th and 8th of October 2026. Barceló Nasandhura Malé has been announced as the Host Partner for the event. The programme will begin on the 7th of October with SATA Connect & Conversation, followed by the SATA Gala Night on the 8th of October. The Maldives' involvement extends beyond hosting the event. Visit Maldives Corporation has been named the Official Destination Partner of SATA 2026, with the partnership formally signed in July. Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO and Managing Director of Visit Maldives, signed the agreement on behalf of the organization during the SATA 2026 Partnership Signing Ceremony held at Barceló Nasandhura Malé. Visit Maldives said the partnership reflects its commitment to strengthening regional tourism collaboration and supporting initiatives that promote excellence across South Asia's travel and hospitality industry. The partnership also supports efforts to position the Maldives as a destination not only for leisure travel, but also for international tourism events, conferences and industry gatherings.
Connecting the Region's Tourism Industry
The main programme will open on the 7th of October with SATA Connect & Conversation (C&C), an industry-focused platform designed to bring tourism and hospitality stakeholders together for discussion, networking and knowledge sharing. The programme is expected to feature panel discussions addressing market trends and developments affecting the region's travel and tourism sector. The Connect platform also incorporates an exhibition-style networking format, enabling tourism and hospitality businesses to showcase their products and services while engaging directly with industry representatives. Beyond the awards themselves, this component of SATA provides an opportunity for participants from different South Asian markets to establish industry connections, exchange perspectives and engage in conversations about developments shaping tourism across the region.
Gala Night to Celebrate Regional Achievements
The two-day programme will culminate in the SATA Gala Night on the 8th of October, when achievements across the region's travel and hospitality industry will be recognised. The 2026 awards span a broad spectrum of the tourism sector, with categories covering hotels and resorts, travel agencies, adventure and sports tourism, wellness, sustainability, culinary excellence, aviation and individual hospitality leadership, among other areas. According to the latest event announcement, gold and silver winners will be recognised across the award categories, with the event bringing together participants representing Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The Regional Leadership Behind SATA
SATA's development over the past decade has also been shaped by a regional leadership structure involving figures from across South Asia. At the centre of the initiative is Ismail Hameed of the Maldives, Founder and President of SATA, who has been associated with the awards since their inception. Suraj Khan of India is identified as Vice President (India), while Sameer Yoonus of Sri Lanka has been identified as Vice President (Sri Lanka). Their involvement reflects the regional character of an awards programme created to connect and recognise tourism and hospitality stakeholders across national boundaries.
A Decade of Regional Recognition
Since its establishment in 2016, SATA has developed into a regional awards platform encompassing a broad cross-section of the travel and hospitality industry. The organization describes its mission as recognizing and amplifying excellence in South Asian travel and tourism while encouraging innovation, healthy competition and higher standards of service. SATA's host records include editions in Colombo in 2016, the Maldives in 2017, Mumbai in 2018, Galle in 2019, a virtual edition in 2020, the Maldives in 2022, Bengaluru in 2023, Kathmandu in 2024 and Colombo in 2025. The 2025 edition, SATA's ninth, was hosted at Cinnamon Grand Colombo, with Sri Lanka Tourism serving as Destination Partner. The event brought regional tourism and hospitality stakeholders to Sri Lanka before the awards returned to the Maldives for their milestone 10th edition. A decade after its establishment, SATA 2026 represents both a milestone for the awards and another opportunity to bring together the diverse tourism industries of South Asia. Following a regional evaluation process spanning six countries, the focus now turns to Malé, where businesses, professionals and industry stakeholders will gather for two days of discussion, networking and recognition.
