Royal-Thomian Old Boys Golf Match

The proud sporting rivalry between Royal College Colombo and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia will once again take centre stage when the Royal-Thomian Old Boys Golf Match tees off on the 8th of March 2026 at the historic Royal Colombo Golf Club.

A Legacy Beyond the Classroom

Organised by the Royal-Thomian Golfers’ Guild, the annual encounter for the prestigious Fred De Saram Trophy has, for more than five decades, symbolised excellence, camaraderie, and enduring tradition. First presented in 1970, the trophy has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most anticipated alumni sporting events, bringing together generations of Royalists and Thomians who share a passion for the game. What began as a friendly alumni gathering has evolved into a fiercely competitive yet warmly spirited contest. Each year, accomplished veterans and emerging players from both colleges step onto the course determined to uphold the honour of their alma mater while celebrating a rivalry that has become part of the nation’s sporting fabric.

Leadership and Competitive Spirit

This year’s match promises another compelling chapter in the Royal-Thomian story. Royal College will be led by Captain Gamini Jayaweera, supported by Vice-Captain Andy Anderson. S. Thomas’ College will take the field under Captain Rohan Fernando, with Vice-Captain Arjun Dharmadasa providing leadership and strategic support. With experienced captains at the helm, spectators can expect a high-quality contest defined by precision, tactical play, and unwavering focus. Yet beyond the scorecards and trophies, the event remains a celebration of mutual respect and sportsmanship; values deeply ingrained in both institutions. The Royal Colombo Golf Club provides the perfect stage for this prestigious encounter. Renowned for its rich heritage and challenging fairways, the course demands strategic thinking, controlled shot-making, and composure under pressure. It is a fitting venue for a match that blends tradition with top-tier competition.

A Community Effort

The success of the Royal-Thomian Old Boys Golf Match is driven by the dedication of its organising committee. This year’s Event Committee is chaired by Naveen Samarasekera, supported by a committed team working diligently behind the scenes. Their efforts ensure that every aspect of the tournament, from competition format and record keeping to event coordination, reflects the high standards associated with the Royal-Thomian name. Corporate support also plays a vital role, with JAT Holdings PLC coming on board as the official T-Shirt Sponsor. Such partnerships underscore the continued prestige and community backing enjoyed by the Royal-Thomian tradition.

Continuing the Tradition

As anticipation builds toward 8th of March 2026, golf enthusiasts, proud old boys, and supporters are invited to witness another memorable encounter. The Royal-Thomian Old Boys Golf Match is more than a contest for silverware; it is a reaffirmation of friendship, heritage, and shared history.

For over half a century, the Fred De Saram Trophy has represented the spirit of two great schools whose rivalry transcends competition. When the players gather once more at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, they will carry forward a legacy that continues to inspire excellence, honour tradition, and strengthen the enduring bond between Royal and Thomian generations.
