The Sun Turns One. And We Are Grateful.

If you are new here, The Sun is a companion. A quiet presence at your table with a cup of Chai or Latte, steaming beside you. It is not simply a newspaper. It is a pause, a space to think, to breathe, and to linger on the world in small but meaningful ways. In the rush and rumble of life, we offer stories that make you reflect, stories that make you smile, stories that remind you why curiosity matters. More importantly, we listen as much as we speak. From the streets around you to the corners of the globe, our writing aims to give you room to think and to wonder. A moment of clarity in a noisy world. We celebrate voices that deserve to be heard, conversations that provoke thought, and moments that illuminate the ordinary as extraordinary. We welcome a printed paper into your home as one might welcome a familiar friend, honoring the tradition of reading that is as tactile as it is reflective. The Sun exists to be both companion and observer, to leave you with something to ponder, to entertain, and perhaps to carry with you long after the page is closed. As we turn one, we do so with gratitude.
Rishini Weeraratne, Editor
Today, as we turn one, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the journey we have shared. What began as a vision, to create a fashion and lifestyle publication that is global in outlook yet deeply rooted in a truly local essence, has grown into a dynamic platform shaped by creativity, courage and community.
Fashion, travel, art, cuisine, culture, lifestyle and meaningful interviews; these are the pillars that shape our pages and define our purpose. We are more than a publication; we are a reflection of a generation that is curious, creative and globally connected, yet proudly rooted in its identity. From international runways to local ateliers, from world-class destinations to hidden gems closer to home, we curate stories that inspire and inform. We celebrate designers, artists, entrepreneurs and changemakers who are redefining their industries and elevating conversations.
At the heart of our storytelling is a commitment to empowering women and young people, amplifying voices that deserve to be heard and spotlighting journeys that encourage ambition, resilience and innovation. We believe lifestyle is not just about aspiration; it is about authenticity. It is about how we express ourselves, how we travel, what we create, what we consume and how we contribute to culture.
Our aim has always been to present a modern, international perspective while preserving a distinctly local essence; thoughtful, refined and relevant. In just one year, we have built not only a publication, but a community. Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support, engagement and belief inspire us to continue evolving, creating and telling stories that matter.
Thasmina Sookoor, Deputy Editor
My journey began with the unwavering motivation and encouragement of our Editor, who always believed in my potential. She reminded us that anything is possible if we are willing to try, step beyond our comfort zones and remain versatile. With that spirit, we complete our first year with pride and gratitude. To our readers, thank you. Your loyalty and engagement have shaped our growth in print and across digital. Shows like Fame Game, hosted by Kumar de Silva and Rosanne Diaz, allowed us to connect with wider audiences. We are honoured to feature international columnists including Farzana Baduel (The PR Insider), Anshu Bahanda (Wellness Curated), Anjna Kaur (Fashion Room) and Sakshi Mittal (Hak It). Our local voices, Dr. Sulochana Segera, Minoli Ratnayake, Sahitra Ukwatte, Kiara Wijewardene, Zara Esufally, Anargi Jayakody, Amantha Perera, Malinda Perera, Nisindi Jayaratne, Chandri Peris, Dinesh Chandrasena, Shaleeka Jayalath, Giselle Gunewardene, Ananya Abeygunasekera, Shri Amarasinghe, Fazra Irfan, Nimmi Dissanayake Udumalagala, Nuha Faiz, and Sonia Dandona Hirdaramani to name a few, continue to enrich our pages. There were challenges, but together, we made it happen, and we look ahead ready to shine even brighter.

I still remember when Rishini shared the news, and I told myself that we were going to do this the best way. It has been deeply personal. The potential and possibilities are vast, and sometimes I feel frustrated that there are not enough hours in the day to give it all the attention I wish I could. Seeing the team grow alongside the paper has been incredibly reassuring. This is our baby in the truest sense, something we nurture and protect. No matter where my journey in the biomedical field takes me, writing for The Sun has allowed me to leave a piece of myself here. I think a part of me will always remain involved. As the paper turns one, I am definitely cutting onions over here. I am immensely grateful to my editor for trusting me with this vision. It has been wholesome, challenging, and ultimately rewarding.

Yashmitha Sritheran, Senior Features Writer
My journey with The Sun Daily Mirror has been incredibly fulfilling and eye opening. Being a part of The Sun is my first real achievement in the media field, and it holds a very special place in my heart. It was the platform that made me realize I can truly write, not just report, but express my own thoughts, emotions, and perspectives confidently. Writing about films, food, and culture, and the general articles I do, all come from my heart. The most rewarding moment is when someone says they read my article and loved it. That feeling motivates me to aim higher and achieve even more.

Dewmi Dodhani, Junior Content Writer
My journey with The Sun has been a very transformative experience for me. Through this platform, I discovered a different side of myself, a version that is more expressive, observant, and confident. Writing for The Sun allowed me to step outside my academic identity in biomedical science and explore creativity in a way I had not before. While my studies train me to think analytically and scientifically, writing gave me the space to think emotionally and socially. Balancing both has helped me develop a more well-rounded voice, one that values both logic and lived experience.

Noeli Janithma Jesudas, Junior Content Writer
Truthfully, this journey has been one of immense personal and professional growth. It has given me the freedom to explore diverse topics, refine my voice and develop the confidence to tell stories that feel authentic, meaningful and relevant.
THIS IS WHAT SOME OF OUR STORYTELLERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE.

Shaleeka Javalath Principal, CSAS
In one word, enjoyable. But that word carries weight. It is sometimes daunting to sit before a blank page and ask myself whether a topic will resonate, whether it will matter and, more importantly, whether it still falls within the moral and intellectual boundaries of my column. Writing is not simply about filling space; it is about stirring thought. Yet there has been something deeply rewarding about seeing an idea that began as a restless question in my mind take shape in print. More affirming still has been the feedback from readers who found the content interesting, or felt challenged, or felt they learnt something new. That, to me, has been the true privilege of this journey.

Dr. Sulochana Segera, Founder and Chairperson, Women in Management
My journey with The Sun has been deeply meaningful and purpose driven. Through Her Story Her Strength, I have had the privilege of bringing forward the voices of powerful, resilient, and inspiring women who are shaping industries, communities, and the nation. The platform has allowed me to spotlight not just success but courage, authenticity, and leadership. It has been more than a column; it has been a movement of recognition.

Nuha Faiz, Columnist, Behind Closed Doors
My journey with The Sun has been deeply reflective and quietly transformative. It has given me a space where vulnerability is not edited out, where bold thoughts are not softened, and where honesty is valued over perfection. Writing here never felt transactional, it felt intentional. Each piece has allowed me to grow not just as a writer, but as a thinker.

My journey with The Sun has felt deeply meaningful to me. As someone born and raised in Sri Lanka, being able to contribute to a national newspaper is something I do not take lightly. It feels like coming home in a different way, sharing thoughts shaped by global experiences, but rooted in where I began. Through my column, I have been able to explore fashion not just as aesthetics, but as culture, psychology, history, and responsibility. Writing for The Sun has allowed me to speak about things that matter to me, sustainability, identity, mental health, and the invisible stories behind what we wear. Each piece feels like a conversation with readers. And that, for me, has been the most special part, knowing these reflections might resonate with someone navigating similar questions about self, society, and the future of fashion. It has strengthened my voice, clarified my purpose, and reminded me why storytelling matters.
Turning one is not about marking time. It is about acknowledging trust. Every reader who turned a page, shared a story, sent a message, or paused to reflect has shaped who we are. If The Sun has ever sat beside you in a quiet moment, sparked a thought, or made you feel seen, then you are part of this story too. Happy first birthday to us!
