On June 30th, the auditorium of The British School in Colombo was transformed into a vibrant stage of colour, character, and creativity, as the Junior School hosted its much-anticipated annual concert, Magical Moments. More than just a school performance, the production brought together the full spectrum of the creative arts, music, dance, drama, and visual art, in a cohesive and entertaining display of student talent. The event was attended by parents, staff, and members of the school community, all of whom gathered to celebrate the culmination of months of preparation, collaboration, and rehearsal. From the opening address to the final bow, Magical Moments served as a shining example of what can be achieved when young learners are given the platform to express themselves creatively and confidently.
A Warm Welcome from Student Leaders
The evening began with a thoughtful welcome from the Junior School Music Captains, Arya and Myky, who shared personal insights into their leadership journeys and experiences within the music department over the past year. Their remarks offered a student’s perspective on the importance of the arts in the school experience and set the tone for the evening, one that highlighted passion, dedication, and the joy of performance. Their introduction was followed by the first performance of the night, Magic To Do, delivered by the school’s FOBISIA Squad. Energetic and theatrical, this opening number signaled to the audience that the evening would be filled with movement, music, and moments of genuine magic.
Stepping Into Wonderland
The thematic centerpiece of the concert was a journey through the world of Alice in Wonderland, reimagined and retold through music, dance, and drama. The creative decision to anchor the concert in this familiar tale allowed students to explore iconic characters while engaging in original and interpretive storytelling. The Choir Squad performed Alice’s Theme, followed by a series of performances from the Drama Squad, directed by Ms. Sahla. Students took on the roles of beloved characters, including the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, March Hare, Caterpillar, Queen of Hearts, and more, through a combination of poetic narration and expressive acting. Each scene was carefully choreographed and memorably delivered, with students demonstrating strong stage presence and clear understanding of their characters. Their performances reflected not only artistic skill but also emotional intelligence and collaborative discipline. The children embodied their roles with authenticity, capturing the whimsical nature of the story while delivering lines with clarity and confidence.
Dancing Through a Dream
Complementing the theatrical performances was a series of well-rehearsed dance routines, choreographed by Ms. Nadeeka. The Dance Squad brought kinetic energy to the stage, with each group moving in synchrony to upbeat, thematic tracks that reinforced the visual storytelling. Their performance added a rhythmic dimension to the show, one that kept the audience engaged and entertained between dramatic scenes. Adding elegance to the concert was the ballet segment Wish Upon a Wand, choreographed by Ms. Romina. Featuring students in graceful costume, the ballet performance provided a contrast to the more animated numbers, offering a quiet moment of classical beauty. With precision and poise, the students executed their movements to near perfection, highlighting the technical skill and training involved in the school’s performing arts programme.
Musical Highlights
Under the musical direction of Ms. Anu, the Choir Squad took on a repertoire of challenging and emotive group songs that added emotional depth to the evening. Their renditions of Magical Kingdom, Somewhere Only We Know, Go the Distance, and the show-stopping Wicked Medley were standout moments. The students demonstrated strong vocal discipline, dynamic control, and an impressive range, especially given the age group of the performers. Each musical piece aligned with the larger theme of the concert, contributing to the narrative arc and mood of the production. The musical transitions were smooth and cohesive, allowing the story to unfold naturally and maintain audience interest throughout the duration of the programme.
A Touching Contribution from Staff
A particularly touching element of the evening came from the Staff Choir, which performed two well-loved numbers, A Thousand Years and We Are the Dreamers. Their performance served as both a musical interlude and a symbolic gesture of community and encouragement. The inclusion of teachers on stage highlighted the school’s holistic approach to education, where staff members actively model creativity, passion, and teamwork. It was clear that the students were not alone in their journey to the stage, they were supported by a community that values and uplifts artistic expression.
Lighting the Way with Art
One of the most visually striking elements of Magical Moments was the creative use of handmade lamps, designed by the students under the guidance of Ms. Indika. These glowing art pieces lined the auditorium and stage, casting a warm and whimsical glow over the space. Each lamp was unique, a reflection of the child who created it. Their inclusion served both as a beautiful set design element and a subtle metaphor for the theme of the night, that every child has a light within, and when given the right environment, that light can shine brightly.
This visual art component added depth to the production, reinforcing the interdisciplinary nature of the concert and celebrating creativity in all its forms.
Behind the Scenes
The production was led and coordinated by Ms. Sarah, Head of Performances and The Arts at The British School in Colombo. Her leadership was evident in the event’s smooth execution and cohesive artistic direction. Bringing together multiple departments, music, drama, dance, and art, required careful planning, dedication, and a clear vision. Ms. Sarah’s role in uniting teachers, students, and support staff around a single creative objective was instrumental in the success of Magical Moments. Her commitment to fostering the arts within the school community has resulted in a concert that is not only entertaining but deeply meaningful.
A Fitting Finale
The concert concluded with a powerful ensemble performance of Defying Gravity, a song that carried emotional weight and symbolic resonance. As the students sang, “Everyone deserves the chance to fly,” it was clear that this performance was about more than just talent, it was about empowerment. The final note was met with resounding applause and a standing ovation from the audience. Parents, teachers, and peers rose to their feet not just to acknowledge a well-produced show, but to celebrate the effort, courage, and creativity of every child who took part.
More Than Just a Concert
Magical Moments was a celebration of what is possible when children are given the tools to explore their imagination and the support to bring it to life. It showcased the power of the performing arts to build confidence, promote collaboration, and create lasting memories. For many students, this concert will be remembered as a milestone, a moment when they stepped into the spotlight and realised, they were capable of more than they thought. As the lights dimmed and the audience made their way to the courtyard for refreshments, there was a shared sense of pride and joy. In every costume, every prop, every note, and every step, Magical Moments reflected the heart of a school that believes in the power of the arts, and the potential of every child.
