We’re signalling to the world that Sri Lanka is back; confident, ambitious, and full of heart

Rising above Colombo’s skyline like a beacon of aspiration, Cinnamon Life isn’t just a development; it’s a statement. At the helm of this transformative project is Sanjeev Hulugalle, a global hospitality veteran whose return to Sri Lanka marks more than a homecoming. With an illustrious career spanning over a dozen countries and brands such as Four Seasons and KOHLER, Sanjeev brings a rare blend of global luxury acumen and heartfelt Sri Lankan spirit. As CEO and General Manager, he is not only steering Cinnamon Life’s operations but shaping its identity as the “City of Dreams,” a lifestyle hub that merges innovation with authenticity, grandeur with warmth. In this exclusive interview, he shares his journey, the philosophies that guide him, and his vision for a future where Cinnamon Life doesn’t just elevate Colombo but redefines how the world experiences Sri Lanka.

Q What was your vision for Cinnamon Life when you first took on the role of CEO and General Manager?
To create a destination that redefines Colombo’s skyline and spirit; where global sophistication meets the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality. My vision was to build not just a hotel, but a living, breathing lifestyle hub that energises the city and offers something for everyone.
Q Share with us a summary of your personal journey; from classroom to boardroom?
I started off as a young boy with a curious mind in Colombo, and that curiosity took me across the world. From studying in Australia to rising through the ranks with brands like Four Seasons and KOHLER, it’s been a journey shaped by discipline, humility, and a passion for service. Every experience, each role, each city, has added a new layer to how I lead today.
Q Cinnamon Life has been called “Sri Lanka’s City of Dreams.” How do you define that dream?
It’s about possibility. A dream where boundaries blur between work and leisure, global and local, indulgence and authenticity. It’s the dream of a vibrant Sri Lanka stepping confidently onto the world stage.
Q How do you plan to position Cinnamon Life on the global map of luxury destinations?
By staying relentlessly guest-focused, embracing innovation, and telling a compelling Sri Lankan story. We aim to create experiences so layered and personal that guests carry a piece of Cinnamon Life with them wherever they go.
Q You’ve worked in over a dozen countries. How has that shaped your leadership style?
It’s taught me to listen more, judge less, and build bridges across cultures. I lead with empathy, but I’m also fiercely committed to excellence, because both are non-negotiable in luxury. Cultural fluency is key when you’re leading diverse teams and hosting global travellers.
Q After years abroad, what inspired your return to Sri Lanka, and why now?
There’s a time when coming home feels not only right, but necessary. I felt a deep responsibility to contribute to Sri Lanka’s resurgence and be part of a project that could uplift not just a city, but a country.
Q What lessons from your time at Four Seasons and KOHLER are you applying at Cinnamon Life?
From Four Seasons: the art of anticipation and personalisation. From KOHLER: an obsession with design and detail. Both taught me that luxury is about how something makes you feel, not just how it looks.
Q How do you blend global luxury standards with authentic Sri Lankan culture at Cinnamon Life?
We don’t see them as opposites. We take world-class benchmarks and infuse them with Sri Lankan storytelling; whether through cuisine, design, rituals, or our people. It’s about creating an emotional connection that’s both universal and uniquely local.
Q In what ways is Cinnamon Life contributing to Sri Lanka’s post-crisis recovery and tourism revival?
We’re signalling to the world that Sri Lanka is back; confident, ambitious, and full of heart. By attracting international attention, creating jobs, and offering something new, we’re helping rebuild both pride and prospects.
Q Cinnamon Life is more than a hotel; it’s a lifestyle hub. What unique experiences are you offering residents and guests?
From curated dining journeys to rooftop nightlife, designer retail to cultural moments; Cinnamon Life is where experiences intersect. It’s a place to live, work, celebrate, and discover, all under one roof.
Q Are there any upcoming partnerships or innovations, especially in tech or wellness, you’re particularly excited about?
We’re looking at partnerships that enhance the guest journey, from digital concierge services to cutting-edge wellness collaborations. The future of hospitality lies in thoughtful innovation that doesn’t just impress but truly enhances lives.
Q What’s your approach to curating guest experiences in an era where personalisation is key?
Listen, learn, and adapt. We empower our teams to create moments that feel tailor-made, because today’s guest values connection more than perfection. Personalisation begins with genuine curiosity about who our guests are.
Q What have been your biggest challenges in overseeing a project of this scale?
Navigating complexity while staying true to the vision. It’s like conducting an orchestra, each part must perform in harmony, even when the tempo shifts. Balancing ambition with practicality is a daily exercise.
Q How do you navigate balancing long-term strategy with short-term operational demands in such a dynamic environment?
By building strong teams and trusting them. Strategy sets the compass, but operations keep the engine running daily. Both need equal focus and care. I believe in decentralised leadership, where accountability is paired with empowerment.
Q You speak often of your upbringing among strong women. How has that influenced your approach to people and culture?
It’s shaped everything. I believe in empathy-led leadership, in uplifting voices, and in creating a culture where everyone feels seen and valued. My mother and grandmother taught me that strength and compassion are not opposites; they’re allies.
Q How are you cultivating talent within Cinnamon Life to create the next generation of Sri Lankan hospitality leaders?
We’re investing in learning, mentorship, and exposure. It’s about growing talent from within and giving young Sri Lankans the tools, and the confidence, to lead on a global stage. We want Cinnamon Life to be a launchpad for future leaders.
Q What does success look like for you at Cinnamon Life in the next 5–10 years?
Success is seeing Cinnamon Life become a beloved landmark; internationally respected, locally rooted, and deeply human. A place that inspires pride in every Sri Lankan and becomes synonymous with excellence in hospitality.
Q What advice would you give to young Sri Lankans dreaming of a career in luxury hospitality?
Dream big but stay curious and grounded. Learn constantly, serve wholeheartedly, and never lose sight of where you come from. The industry is evolving, and those who succeed are the ones who lead with both head and heart.
Q When you’re not working, where do you go or what do you do to recharge?
I turn to nature, to music, and to moments of stillness. Whether it’s a walk on the beach or quiet time with family, it’s the simple things that renew me. Stillness is often where the best ideas are born.
Q Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
Hopefully still learning, still creating, and still contributing; whether here or elsewhere. But most importantly, I hope I’ve helped shape a generation of leaders who believe in the power of this island. That would be the most meaningful legacy.
As Cinnamon Life rises, so too does a new chapter for Colombo, and for Sri Lanka. With Sanjeev Hulugalle at the helm, the project isn’t just a destination; it’s a declaration. Rooted in purpose, powered by innovation, and led by someone who embodies both global finesse and island soul, Cinnamon Life stands poised to transform not only the skyline, but the story Sri Lanka tells the world.
