A New Era in Youth Leadership

Recently the grand halls of Monarch Imperial became the backdrop for one of the most anticipated events in the Rotaract calendar, the 35th Rotaract District Assembly of District 3220, Sri Lanka and Maldives. With over 800 Rotaractors, dignitaries, and youth leaders in attendance, the 35th Rotaract District Assembly was more than just a ceremonial transition; it was a stirring celebration of service, leadership, and the enduring spirit of youth driven change. This landmark occasion marked the official handover of district leadership from PHF Rtn. Rtr. PP Shanel Mendis (DRR 2024–25) to Rtr. PP Nazmi Mahmood (DRR 2025–26), moment symbolically captured in the collaring ceremony and echoed in every speech, award, and applause that followed

Setting the Tone: Form, Tradition, and Purpose

The morning opened with the registration of participants and refreshments, soon followed by a vibrant welcome dance and an official countdown animation that transitioned seamlessly into the unveiling of the year’s theme logo. The ceremonial lighting of the oil lamp and the playing of the Sri Lankan, Maldivian, and Indian national anthems grounded the proceedings in cultural unity and formality. The first formal session began with a welcome address by the Project Co-Chairpersons, Rtr. Amaan Zahid, Rtr. IPP Andrew Dilan, and Rtr. IPP Vimasha Weerawansha, who provided thoughtful context for the day’s proceedings and paid tribute to the collaborative nature of Rotaract leadership. This was followed by the presentation of the annual report and an address by District Secretary 2024–25, Rtr. PP Salman Mohamed, summarizing key initiatives and outcomes from the past term. He highlighted operational efficiency, inter-club cooperation, and impact-driven programming, setting a professional tone for the rest of the day.

A Moment of Transition: Rtr. PP Nazmi Mahmood Takes the Helm

The second session commenced with the return of dignitaries, another traditional lighting of the oil lamp, and a welcome performance by the Ananda College Dancing Circle. A compelling curtain raiser video and sponsor features created momentum as the audience settled for the main event of the afternoon: the introduction and collaring of the new District Rotaract Representative, Rtr. PP Nazmi Mahmood. Known for his quiet determination and operational discipline, DRR Nazmi’s inaugural address emphasized inclusivity, data driven decision making, and continuity of leadership across the island and the Maldives. He spoke of sustainability, digital infrastructure, and Rotaract’s evolving role in shaping national conversations. The launch of the new District Website followed a symbol of transparency, modernization, and accessibility. DRR Nazmi then led the formal induction of the District Steering Committee for 2025–26, introducing a new team of professionals and volunteers committed to executing the district’s strategic plan.

Celebrating Excellence and Acknowledging Legacy

The second session of the Awards Ceremony followed spotlighting standout clubs and individuals for innovation in project planning, international collaboration, public relations, and community outreach. The awards served as both motivation and a barometer for best practices across the district. The final phase of the day included a string of formal introductions, Rtn. PP Haneeka Rahil as the new District Rotaract Chairperson 2025–26, Rtn. Shaleeka Jayalath as District Youth Service Chair, and the guest of honour for the evening, Rotary District Governor 2025–26, Rtn. Delvin Pereira. Each dignitary delivered focused remarks, with an emphasis on intergenerational collaboration, values-based leadership, and Rotaract’s role in strengthening civil society. Notably, Rotary District Governor, Rtn. Delvin Pereira’s keynote provided a broader Rotary perspective, encouraging strategic alignment and innovation at the grassroots level. Tokens of appreciation were presented by DRR Nazmi to all key contributors to the year’s success.
