AYESH DE FONSEKA

  • We only source raw materials from ethical mines and verified traders, conducting detailed background checks on every supplier. A large portion of our jewellery is still handmade, which helps preserve traditional techniques and reduces our environmental footprint.
  • Our reputation was built on decades of transparency and trust. My parents, the founders of Tiesh, instilled in my sister and me the importance of openness, whether it is about gemstone origin, pricing, workmanship, or gold purity.

In Sri Lanka’s vibrant jewellery landscape, few names resonate with as much style, substance, and sincerity as Tiesh. At the heart of this celebrated brand is Ayesh De Fonseka, the dynamic co-owner and creative visionary shaping its journey. From his childhood split between Kandy and Sydney to carrying forward a family legacy rooted in trust, Ayesh has redefined what it means to blend heritage with modernity. His eye for design, commitment to ethical sourcing, and deep respect for traditional craftsmanship have positioned Tiesh as a beacon of innovation and authenticity in the luxury space. Under his guidance, Tiesh has evolved beyond a jewellery house into a symbol of timeless elegance and contemporary relevance. In this edition of Legacy Builders, Ayesh opens up about his journey, the brand’s philosophy, and the values that continue to shape both his personal path and Tiesh’s enduring success.

Q Could you share a bit about your early life, education, and the experiences that shaped your journey into the world of jewellery and entrepreneurship?
I grew up between Kandy and Sydney, Australia. I began my schooling at Trinity College in Kandy, then spent four years in Sydney from the ages of six to ten. Most of my primary education was in Australia, but I returned to complete my middle and secondary schooling at Trinity. Moving between countries and switching from Sinhalese-medium to English-medium and back again was challenging. But it taught me adaptability, which has been invaluable as an entrepreneur.
Q Tiesh has a long-standing reputation in Sri Lanka’s jewellery industry. How has your family legacy shaped your vision for the brand today?
Our reputation was built on decades of transparency and trust. My parents, the founders of Tiesh, instilled in my sister and me the importance of openness, whether it is about gemstone origin, pricing, workmanship, or gold purity. These values remain at the core of our business. We consider our staff an extension of the “Tiesh family,” and that shared ethos forms the foundation of everything we do.
Q What first drew you to jewellery design and the gemstone trade, and how do you keep that passion alive in a highly competitive industry?
For me, joining the trade felt like a rite of passage. My parents built Tiesh from the ground up, and I wanted to honour their legacy by taking it further, locally and internationally. What keeps me going is the desire to improve on this foundation. The pursuit of making Tiesh a household name in luxury jewellery continues to drive me every day.
Q What inspired the name Tiesh?
The name is a blend of my sister’s name, Thiyasha, and mine, Ayesh. Originally, the business was called Lakmini, but in 2007 we rebranded it as Tiesh. It gave both of us a strong sense of ownership and pride. It is also a modern and memorable name, which helps the brand connect with today’s customers.
Q How do you maintain international standards of quality while preserving a distinctly Sri Lankan identity in your work?
Serving the tourism market means catering to well-travelled clients who expect the highest standards. Our team is trained both locally and internationally to ensure excellence in quality and service. At the same time, our Sri Lankan identity is reflected in the artisanal craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. Many of our goldsmiths and silversmiths are second or third generation. Their skill is what gives our jewellery its soul.
Q Ethical sourcing and sustainability are key global conversations in luxury industries. How does Tiesh approach responsible jewellery-making?
We only source raw materials from ethical mines and verified traders, conducting detailed background checks on every supplier. A large portion of our jewellery is still handmade, which helps preserve traditional techniques and reduces our environmental footprint. Sustainability and ethics are not just trends for us. They are part of our brand DNA.
Q Jewellery often marks life’s most significant moments. How do you ensure each customer’s experience feels personal and meaningful?
Jewellery is deeply emotional. Bespoke design is one of our greatest strengths. In the tourism sector, clients often select a gemstone and then collaborate with our in-house designers to create a custom piece. Our artisans can bring their vision to life within days. This personalised approach has become increasingly popular in the local market too, especially for diamond and wedding jewellery, where customers want their stories reflected in the final piece.
Q What role does technology and innovation play in shaping Tiesh’s collections today compared to when the brand first began?
Technology has completely transformed jewellery-making. CAD design, casting, and 3D printing allow us to produce intricate pieces with precision and speed. That said, there is something special about sitting with a designer, watching an idea go from sketch to finished product. We strive to balance the innovation of today with the artistry of yesterday.
Q Running a jewellery business in today’s economy comes with unique challenges. What have been some defining obstacles, and how have you overcome them?
Every challenge is an opportunity to adapt. That mindset stems from my childhood experience of constantly adjusting to new environments. When faced with slowdowns, we pivot. Whether by exploring new markets, refining product lines, or enhancing our digital presence, we always find ways to evolve. Our presence in both the tourism and local sectors has also helped us stay resilient through tough times.
Q Sri Lanka is world-renowned for its sapphires and gemstones. What role do you believe Tiesh plays in showcasing the country’s gem heritage internationally?
We proudly use the tagline “Home of the Ceylon Sapphire”. This is more than just marketing. We are known for sourcing some of the best sapphires in the country. Every gemstone is personally selected by a family member, ensuring the highest quality. Through each piece we create, we help showcase Sri Lanka’s exceptional gem heritage on the global stage.
Q For aspiring jewellers, designers, and entrepreneurs, what lessons from your journey would you pass on?
Stay the course and be consistent. Success rarely happens overnight. My sister and I are fortunate to have inherited a strong foundation, but we work every day to build on it. Resilience, adaptability, and daily dedication matter more than talent alone. Show up. Keep learning. Keep evolving. That is the formula that has worked for me.
