Inspiring Leadership, Driving Change The Story of Round Table Sri Lanka

In a world marked by uncertainty and ever-evolving challenges, both global and local, there is a powerful force quietly building a better future in Sri Lanka: Round Table Sri Lanka (RTSL). A dynamic, youth-led movement rooted in service, camaraderie, and leadership, RTSL is empowering a generation of young men to grow, serve, and lead with integrity. Affiliated with the internationally respected Round Table International (RTI) movement, RTSL brings together men between the ages of 18 and 40 from diverse professional backgrounds.

Whether entrepreneurs, executives, creatives, or community leaders, they all share one thing in common: a drive to make meaningful change in society while developing themselves personally and professionally. With nine active Tables spread across key cities including Colombo, Negombo, Kandy, Matara, Kurunegala, and even as far north as Jaffna, Round Table Sri Lanka is rapidly becoming a national network for transformation. It’s a platform for ambitious young Sri Lankans seeking connection, contribution, and character development. “Round Table gave me a platform to grow, serve, and lead. It's more than a club; it’s a brotherhood,” said Dinuka Ranasinghe, National Public Relations Officer of RTSL.

Fellowship Rooted in Purpose (and Plenty of Laughter)

At its heart, Round Table Sri Lanka is about meaningful relationships. It’s a non-political, non-sectarian association that embraces diversity, encourages dialogue, and celebrates shared values like empathy, innovation, and service. Tablers, as members are called, come from all walks of life but form deep bonds through fellowship. This fellowship comes alive in a variety of ways, from formal meetings and leadership workshops to casual dinners and unforgettable social events. One annual highlight is the Colombo Comedy Show, hosted by Colombo Taprobane Round Table 3. Now in its ninth year, the event draws hundreds of attendees and raises funds for charity, all while filling the room with laughter. “The comedy show isn’t just about laughs; it’s about unity, purpose, and making a difference together,” shared a participating Tabler. Whether attending international conferences, participating in Area and World AGMs, or simply chatting over coffee with fellow members, the essence of RTSL is in its people. The focus is never just on professional connections; it’s on friendship, mentorship, and shared purpose. “In Round Table, you find your voice, your purpose, and your people,” said Omar Yakooth, National Secretary of RTSL.

A Global Brotherhood, A Shared Mission

As a proud member of Round Table International, RTSL offers members access to a truly global network. RTI spans over 65 countries, fostering bonds between thousands of like-minded young leaders. This global connectivity opens doors to international travel, cultural exchange, professional growth, and exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking. These global opportunities are not just about networking; they’re about learning. Tablers attend international meetings, collaborate on multinational service projects, and forge friendships that last a lifetime. “Our international network is a gateway to lifelong friendships and professional growth,” noted Tharindu Ameresekere, National International Relations Officer. Whether it’s trading ideas with fellow Tablers in Germany, co-hosting service initiatives in India, or representing Sri Lanka at a Round Table World Meeting, these experiences enrich the RTSL journey and broaden each member’s perspective.

Serving Communities, Changing Lives

Service is at the very core of Round Table Sri Lanka. Each Table undertakes community initiatives tailored to local needs; ranging from education and health to disaster relief and empowerment.

Some standout projects include:

  • Long-standing support for Navodya School, an institution for children with special needs, through funding classrooms, sanitation facilities, and school supplies
  • Swift responses during natural disasters such as floods and landslides, providing food, shelter,
  • and medical aid
  • Regular medical donation drives to underserved rural hospitals
  • COVID-19 response programs, including the distribution of essential goods to affected families
  • Scholarship schemes and provision of learning materials to underprivileged students
  • Organizing vision screening and health camps for schoolchildren

These decentralized projects reflect the strength of the Table-led model, allowing each unit to serve their immediate community while contributing to a larger, national impact.

At its heart, Round Table Sri Lanka is about meaningful relationships. It’s a non-political, non-sectarian association that embraces diversity, encourages dialogue, and celebrates shared values like empathy, innovation, and service.

The Helps Schools Foundation: RTSL’s National Project

This year marked a significant milestone in RTSL’s history with the official adoption of the Helps Schools Foundation as its national project. Originating from an initiative by the Negombo Round Table, the Foundation focuses on uplifting Sri Lanka’s struggling schools, renovating buildings, installing sanitation systems, providing libraries, and supplying learning materials. Now operating under a registered trust, the Helps Schools Foundation has evolved into a national movement recognized by Round Table International. It is not just about fixing classrooms; it’s about empowering the next generation through education. “Helps Schools Foundation has grown from a local effort to a national movement. It's a true reflection of what we can achieve together,” said Nilupul Batuwitaarachchi, National Community Service Convenor.

The project aligns with ASPA (Asia South Pacific Area) priorities, particularly the focus on education and long-term child development. RTSL’s contribution to this shared regional vision positions it as a key player in the Asia Pacific region. “We’re proud that our national project resonates with ASPA’s goals. Education is the most powerful investment we can make,” emphasized Raveen Wickramasinghe, National President of RTSL.

Cultivating Tomorrow’s Leaders

More than anything, RTSL is a leadership laboratory. Members are encouraged to take up leadership positions from their first day. From chairing Table meetings to organizing fundraising galas and representing Sri Lanka on the world stage, Tablers are continually challenged, and supported, to step up. Through these roles, they gain real-world experience in public speaking, budgeting, project management, crisis response, diplomacy, and people management.

“Round Table helped me step out of my comfort zone. I became a better speaker, a better planner, and a better human being,” said Shamaal Panagoda, a Past National President and former ASPA Chairman. The result? RTSL alumni emerge as confident, ethical, and compassionate leaders; ready to serve not only within the movement but in the wider world.
