A Pan-Asian Dining Experience Rooted in Myth Flavour & Community
Colombo’s ever-evolving dining landscape has welcomed a powerful new contender with the launch of Baihu, a Pan-Asian restaurant that celebrates bold flavours, cultural connection, and creative collaboration. Co-founded by Mr. Sanka Abeywarna, Mr. Karl Kao, and Mrs. Kaeshavie Parinathan, Baihu officially opened its doors on Stratford Avenue, introducing a fresh culinary perspective that is both contemporary and deeply inspired by Asian tradition.
A Concept Born of Myth and Friendship
The name Baihu, meaning “White Tiger,” draws inspiration from the legendary guardian of the West in Chinese mythology, a celestial creature symbolising courage, elegance, and cosmic balance. This legend does more than lend the restaurant its name; it forms the foundation of Baihu’s identity, weaving myth and meaning into every element of its experience, from its flavour philosophy to its design aesthetic. “This restaurant is all about three friends from three different backgrounds coming together as one,” said Karl Kao, Director and Co-Founder of Baihu. “We wanted to create a space that celebrates Pan-Asian flavours while introducing a subculture of BYOB dining, a concept where families and like-minded people can gather over food, stories, and shared experiences.”
A Celebration of Pan-Asian Flavours
The Baihu menu is an expressive showcase of Asia’s culinary diversity, featuring over 40 meticulously curated dishes that take diners on a journey through the continent’s most iconic flavours. From the aromatic heat of Sichuan to the umami depth of Japanese cuisine, Baihu’s offerings reflect a thoughtful blend of authenticity and innovation. Signature dishes include the Baihu Yang Chow Fried Rice, a flavour-packed favourite that anchors the menu, alongside Pork Belly Bao Buns, a selection of handmade Dumplings, and the showstopping Whole Fried Snapper, served with a trio of house-made sauces. Every dish is crafted with balance in mind, a harmony of taste, texture, and presentation that pays homage to the restaurant’s mythological namesake. The culinary team behind Baihu has designed the menu to be approachable yet exciting, appealing to both adventurous food lovers and those seeking comfort in familiar flavours. The experience encourages sharing and discovery, embodying the social spirit at the heart of Pan-Asian dining.

The BYOB Subculture: Redefining Dining in Colombo
One of Baihu’s most distinctive features is its BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) concept, a refreshing addition to Colombo’s dining culture. Encouraging guests to bring their own wine, champagne, or spirits, Baihu invites diners to create a personalised experience that is both casual and elevated. The BYOB format offers freedom and inclusivity, enabling guests to pair their preferred drinks with Baihu’s diverse cuisine while maintaining an accessible price point. It’s a concept that reflects the founders’ commitment to building community through food, breaking away from formality to foster warmth, connection, and authenticity.
Design that Speaks to the Spirit of the White Tiger
Inside Baihu, design and storytelling intertwine. The interiors blend contemporary minimalism with subtle Eastern symbolism, creating a space that feels modern yet soulful. Clean lines, natural materials, and refined lighting set the stage for a dining experience that is as visually striking as it is comfortable. Whether it’s a family dinner, a celebration with friends, or an intimate evening out, Baihu’s atmosphere adapts seamlessly, balancing vibrancy with intimacy. Every corner of the restaurant tells a story, from its design palette inspired by the White Tiger’s purity and strength to the fine details that echo its mythic origins.
A New Standard for Colombo’s Dining Scene
With its bold Pan-Asian cuisine, innovative BYOB concept, and brand identity rooted in ancient mythology, Baihu stands out as a destination that redefines how Colombo gathers around food. More than just a restaurant, it represents a shared vision, one that bridges cultures, generations, and experiences. Baihu invites diners to step into its world of flavour and myth, where every meal becomes a celebration of courage, creativity, and connection. Baihu is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM, at No. 8, Stratford Avenue, Colombo 6.
