On Saturday, 23rd August 2025 at 7:00 p.m., the Soul Sounds Academy, under the inspired leadership of Soundarie David Rodrigo and ably assisted by Shenuk Wijesinghe and Uvini Sirisena, will present a heartwarming musical evening titled “WHY WE SING.” This much-anticipated event will take place at ‘The Club House, Havelock City, Colombo,’ marking the maiden concert of the Soul Sounds Senior Community Choir. This is not just another concert; it’s the birth of a tradition that celebrates the universal language of music, the joy of community, and the timeless truth that singing has no age limit.
Why a Senior Community Choir?
The idea for the Senior Community Choir came to Soundarie during her numerous overseas tours, where she observed something remarkable. At international choir festivals and competitions, she noticed a strong presence of choirs composed entirely of senior singers. These were groups of men and women whose love for music hadn’t dimmed with age, in fact, it had only grown richer. The message was clear: Music is for everyone, at every stage of life.
“No matter what age you are, music always brings people together,” says Soundarie. “It’s therapeutic. It lifts your spirits, strengthens bonds, and gives you purpose. Many seniors today finally have the time to do something they’ve always loved but never had the chance to pursue. I wanted to make that dream possible for them, and to give them the joy of singing to a soul out there.”

The choir currently numbers around 45 voices, each adding its own warmth and character to the ensemble. Their debut programme for “WHY WE SING” promises an eclectic and nostalgic selection, evergreen English hits from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, along with a sprinkling of popular Sinhala and Tamil favourites. It’s an evening designed to delight audiences of all ages, offering both familiarity and surprise.
