In a world where young people are redefining leadership and social impact, Yashika Nipuni stands out as a remarkable example of passion, resilience, and purpose driven success. From excelling in academics to championing sustainability, youth empowerment, and community service, her journey reflects the power of determination and authenticity. Born in Galle and raised in Colombo, Yashika has continuously balanced multiple roles including student leader, environmental advocate, volunteer, mentor, and fashion personality while remaining deeply committed to creating positive change. A graduate of the University of Peradeniya with a background in Computer Science, Statistics, and Mathematics, she currently works as a Signature Experiences Associate at The Pekoe Trail Organization, contributing to regenerative tourism and environmental conservation in Sri Lanka. Through her involvement with organizations such as Rotaract, AIESEC, and Zero Plastic, as well as her achievements in leadership and pageantry, Yashika continues to inspire young people to pursue their passions fearlessly while making meaningful contributions to society.

Can you tell us a little about your journey from Galle to becoming a youth advocate and climate activist?

I was born in Galle and later moved to Colombo with my family during childhood. My school journey at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya played a huge role in shaping who I am today. I pursued Physical Science for my Advanced Levels and later entered the Faculty of Science at the University of Peradeniya, where I studied Computer Science, Statistics, and Mathematics. From a very young age, I was passionate about academics and consistently worked hard to perform well in my studies. Throughout my school years, I received several awards and subject prizes for academic excellence, which motivated me to continue striving for success.

However, my journey was never limited to academics alone. I actively participated in extracurricular activities, sports, leadership programs, dancing, and the astronomy club. These experiences taught me discipline, teamwork, confidence, and communication skills. During university, I became involved in many clubs and societies and took on leadership roles that exposed me to youth advocacy, sustainability initiatives, and social impact projects.

Over time, these experiences naturally guided me towards climate action and environmental advocacy. I realized that young people have a significant role to play in creating a better and more sustainable future. Today, I work as a Signature Experiences Associate at The Pekoe Trail Organization, where I contribute to regenerative tourism, environmental conservation, and community engagement. The Pekoe Trail is Sri Lanka’s first long distance hiking trail connecting communities, tea plantations, nature, and culture while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

This role has allowed me to combine my academic background with my passion for sustainability and youth empowerment. It has shown me that science, technology, tourism, and environmental advocacy can work together to create meaningful social and environmental impact.

What inspired you to pursue Computer Science, Statistics, and Mathematics at the University of Peradeniya?

Since childhood, I have always been fascinated by science and mathematics. I loved reading about scientific discoveries, innovations, and individuals who used knowledge to improve society. As technology rapidly evolved around the world, I became increasingly interested in artificial intelligence, data science, and the power of technology driven solutions. That curiosity inspired me to pursue Computer Science, Statistics, and Mathematics at the University of Peradeniya. I believed this combination would provide a strong academic foundation for higher studies and future career opportunities in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

What I appreciate most about these fields is how they encourage logical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Technology and data have become essential in almost every industry today, including sustainability and environmental conservation. Studying these subjects not only strengthened my technical knowledge but also taught me analytical thinking and adaptability, which continue to help me in both my personal and professional life.

You’ve balanced academics, leadership, volunteering, and fashion successfully. How do you manage it all?

I believe balance comes from passion, discipline, and proper time management. When you truly love what you do, it becomes easier to remain motivated and committed. I approach every responsibility with dedication and genuine interest, which helps me manage different aspects of my life without feeling overwhelmed. Self-awareness is also very important. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and limitations allows you to prioritize responsibilities effectively. I strongly believe that becoming an all-rounder does not necessarily require extraordinary talent. Consistency, hard work, discipline, and the willingness to learn from others are equally important. Another key factor is collaboration. I have always believed in teamwork and reaching out for support when necessary. Whether in academics, leadership, or volunteering, surrounding yourself with supportive and inspiring individuals can make a huge difference. At the same time, I always try to maintain a healthy balance between personal growth and responsibilities. Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is essential when managing multiple commitments.

What motivated you to become actively involved in organizations such as Rotaract, AIESEC, and Zero Plastic?

I have always enjoyed community service, leadership, and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. Organizations like Rotaract, AIESEC, and Zero Plastic gave me opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society while also developing myself personally and professionally. Through these organizations, I worked on projects related to environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, professional development, volunteering, and community service. Holding leadership positions taught me valuable skills such as communication, project management, teamwork, and problem solving. These experiences also expanded my network and introduced me to many inspiring individuals who were equally passionate about creating change. Every project and initiative became a learning experience that helped shape my personality and broaden my perspective about leadership and social responsibility.

As the Charter President of the Zero Plastic Peradeniya Club, what impact were you hoping to create?

I became a founding member of the Zero Plastic Movement in 2020, and in 2021, together with an incredible director board, we chartered the Zero Plastic Peradeniya Club at the University of Peradeniya. Despite the challenges during the COVID 19 pandemic, we successfully built a strong community with nearly 1,000 members across different faculties within a very short period. We organized around 20 online and physical initiatives, including awareness campaigns, environmental surveys, clean-up projects, competitions, and educational programs. One of the most meaningful initiatives was Project Yuthukama, which I co-founded with my Vice President during the Dalada Perahera season. It began as a clean-up and awareness campaign focused on environmental responsibility. Over time, it evolved into an award-winning university project that brought recognition not only to the club but also to the university itself. Our vision was always to inspire young people to take responsibility for environmental sustainability and understand that even small actions can create long term impact. Seeing the club continue to grow and receive recognition remains one of the proudest achievements of my life.

How has your experience as a Global Volunteer shaped your perspective on youth empowerment and community service?

My experience as a Global Volunteer was truly life changing. It was my first experience travelling abroad independently, and it became one of the biggest learning opportunities in my life. I had the chance to work with around 20 volunteers from nearly 10 different countries. Being part of such a diverse environment exposed me to different cultures, religions, languages, traditions, and perspectives. It taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and global collaboration. During the project, I taught Science, Mathematics, and English to underprivileged students while organizing educational and recreational activities. Beyond volunteering itself, I also had opportunities to travel and experience new cultures, which expanded my worldview significantly. This experience boosted my confidence and personal growth tremendously.

It showed me how youth from different backgrounds can come together to create positive change. I strongly believe global volunteering helps young people become more open minded, socially responsible, and globally aware individuals.

You’re passionate about sustainability and climate action. What changes would you like to see young people make today?

Climate change and environmental sustainability are issues that affect everyone today. Through my involvement in initiatives such as LCOY 23, RCOY 24, and the LCOY 25 organizing team, I have been inspired to see more young people actively engaging in climate action. I would love to see youth becoming more conscious about their daily habits and environmental responsibilities. Small lifestyle changes can create significant long-term impact. Using reusable products, reducing plastic waste, conserving resources, using public transportation, and supporting sustainable practices are all important steps. I also believe environmental education should begin at home and during childhood. When young people lead by example, they inspire their communities and future generations to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. Most importantly, I want young people to understand that climate action is not limited to large scale projects. Every small effort matters, and collective action can create meaningful change.

Being crowned Best Personality at Fashion Icon Sri Lanka 2025 is impressive. How do beauty and fashion connect with your advocacy work?

Fashion and pageantry have fascinated me since childhood because they provide a platform to express personality, confidence, values, and individuality. For me, pageantry became more than just appearance. It became part of a personal growth journey. There was a period in my life when I struggled with insecurities, self-doubt, and emotional challenges while constantly trying to meet others’ expectations. Eventually, I realized the importance of prioritizing my own well-being, confidence, and personal growth. That realization motivated me to rebuild myself step by step. Joining pageantry became a way of challenging myself, overcoming insecurities, and sharing my story with others. Winning the Best Personality title at Fashion Icon Sri Lanka 2025 symbolized that journey of transformation and self-confidence. I hope my journey inspires young people, especially those struggling with self-worth or difficult life experiences, to believe in themselves and understand that growth and transformation are always possible.

What message would you like to share with young Sri Lankans who dream of making a difference in society?

My message to young people is simple. Always stay authentic and believe in yourself. Every individual has a unique purpose and potential and discovering that purpose is part of life’s journey. Focus on becoming the best version of yourself every day. Real change begins within ourselves. When you develop confidence, stay true to your values, and continue growing personally, you naturally become capable of creating positive impact in society as well.

Never be afraid to dream big. Follow your passion, continue learning, work hard, and remain consistent even during difficult times. Success is not always immediate, but perseverance and dedication always lead to meaningful results. Most importantly, remember that even small actions can inspire change and create a better future for others.
